Ghetto WiFi Guide  Ghetto Wi-Fi Booster
If you are a cheapskate like me, fiending for inexpensive WiFi signal in your house....but just cant seem to get it and don't want to part with precious cash on an overpriced WiFi booster signal then here is what to do. I just did it last week and now can get online in my none wired home for the first time. It only cost me 99cents.
This was because I already had a USB WiFi adapter (it cost me about $40 online through some guy in FLA - a year ago). Next I needed a USB adapter (which I had laying around from gear I bought before...you should too...or else go on Craigslist and buy cheaper than the damn Apple store).
Then you get a tight-mesh parabolic cooking strainer (IE: a dumpling steamer) and cut a hole in center and then stick the USB WiFi adaptor through the center of the metal steamer/strainer and connect it to the USB extension cable and hang it up high or out the window....
...and most likely you will (like me) boost your indoor WiFi signal enough to get online effortlessly. I just got turned onto this recently c/o my buddy Rohit who found instructions online recently at consumerist.com

I had heard about those guys doing that subway stunt on the F train but I never got to see it so it was great that you had them on the air! And thanks WFMU for the free concert (and in my own neighborhood) the other night which, unfortunately, I couldn't attend. But I will be at your next free concert event! Keep up the unique and needed radio programming, WFMU!

Your makeshift WiFi antenna operates on one of the oldest principles in radio engineering - the parabolic focusing dish. It's the same principle used in radar and by "radio telescopes".

Thu May. 10, 2007 3:07am From: Bob Taylor

Thanks for posting how-to rig the Wi-Fi booster. It works! Thanks to other WFMU listener CS Lewiston for posting here about the 'parabolic focusing dish' - I never knew of that principle til now....Thanks WFMU DJs and listeners for always educating! Bob in VA
