Dengue Fever is a six-piece California band fronted by Cambodian-born vocalist
Chhom Nimol. Guitarist Zac Holtzman got the idea for a retro
Cambodian rock band after hearing tapes his brother Ethan (also in the band) brought back from a
backpacking trip. Chhom Nimol comes from a musical family in Cambodia, one
fortunate enough to have survived the purges of artists and intellectuals by
the Khmer Rouge. Zac found Nimol, star singer at club Dragon House in the
Cambodian community of Long Beach CA, and the rest is history...
Dengue Fever
is one of the many great bands and artists playing the annual one-night world
music festival Globalfest at
Webster Hall, 125 East 11th St on Sunday Jan. 21. Globalfest is presented in conjunction with APAP, the annual
the Arts Presenters conference.
A documentary about the band’s recent visit to Cambodia is also forthcoming,
called Sleepwalking Through The Mekong.
Updates / info at the band’s websites, http://www.denguefevermusic.com or http://www.myspace.com/denguefevermusic.
PLUS in Hour 1:
Global Village Denmark New York is a collaborative project between musicians
from Denmark and New York that culminated with a showcase concert at Makor, 35 W 67th Street on Saturday January 20.
This concert was presented in conjunction with the Arts Presenters’s Conference
(APAP) and with the help of World Music Denmark. Artist
bios and info here. We recorded sessions with three of the
four artists and bands‚ Laila Skovmand, Lelo Nika and Afenginn and we hear one song from each.
Dalia Faitelson helped organize Global Village Denmark New York, along with Nili Belkind, and her band Pilpel also participated, but Pilpel was not present for this show.
The full radio program with longer sets
by each band will air on Transpacific Sound Paradise on Saturday, March 31.
Special thanks to engineers Gil Shuster and Bil Bowen and assistant Juan Aboites.
