Live Session: Extra Golden. A WFMU first - smoking electric East African music in the flesh!

Extra Golden is a collaboration between musicians from the US and Kenya. The original impetus was bandleader Ian Eagleson’s work with the late Extra Golden co-founder Otieno Jagwasi researching benga, the popular Western Kenyan guitar music. The band has pressed on after Otieno’s passing, touring and recording in the US this past autumn (with visa assistance from Barack Obama!).

The autumn ’06 touring lineup included Eagleson, Alex Minoff (like Eagleson, from the indie rock band Golden); guitarist / vocalist Opiyo Bilongo (of benga band Bilongo Golden Stars) and drummer Onyango Wuod Omari. Bassist Noel Coopersmith was also on the tour but not at this taping.
