September 1, 2006: fill-in for Monica: End of summer disco dance party!
A couple of years later I was living in New York City, and in the summers I found myself tuning in regularly to WBLS, the premier disco/dance radio station in the city if not the country. This was particularly a summer phenomenon for me... the music was fun and carefree, and something about the warm weather and being out of school, along with the smooth patter of DJs like Ken "Spider" Webb, Ricky Ricardo and of course the Chief Rocker, Frankie Crocker, made it sound even better.
I've been itching for a chance to spin all the records I bought back then (as well as records I picked up during my brief stint as a 12" buyer at a Queens wholesaler a couple of years later), and what better forum than a fill-in for WFMU's own disco diva, Monica. If you're a regular listener to Monica's show -- and why wouldn't you be?! -- you're well aware that there is much more to her show than disco music. But you also know she has a passion for that music and that era, and I'm thrilled to have the chance to fill in for her today as I present my End Of Summer Disco Dance Party! I hope you enjoy my pale imitation (in more ways than one) of 1980s NYC summertime radio... it's been a little cool this week, though (not that I'm complaining!), so you might want to turn the oven on and run the hot water in the shower for the full steamy summer effect.
