Kyrgyz Musicians

Hear this show now:

Musicians from Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia plus a cultural anthropologist

from Philly stop by for interview and a bit of demonstration / performance.

The younger of the two musicians, Akylbek Kasabolotov is a master musician

renowned for his skill with traditional wind instruments of Central Asia. He

also plays with the Kyrgyz traditional group Tengir Too, who have a cd recently

released by Smithsonian Folkways.  He demonstrates various instruments and plays

a few short solo songs.  And he talks about keeping the tradition alive for the

younger generation.

Ryspai Isakov is a brilliant epic singer who performs the Kyrgyz national epic

Manas, the longest epic in the world at over half a million lines. (He won't be

performing on this show though - only Kasabolotov performs.)

Philadelphia-based anthropologist Helen Faller brought the artists to the US.  She acts as interpreter and helps to provide background.  (Her homepage is currently under construction.)

The following web page (scroll down when you get there) has some additional artist / music info:
The Tengir Too homepage ( also has images and descriptions of Kyrgyz instruments.

Special thanks to WFMU alum Matthew Ostrowski.
