Mariana Sadovska, Mixed Bag & Bollywood
Hear this show now:
The talented young Ukrainian singer (and actress) Mariana Sadovska visits during the first hour-plus. Mixed bag in between, then in the final hour‚ Bollywood songs for Academy Awards weekend.
Mariana Sadovska is a vocalist and actress from Ukraine known for her powerful and unique adaptations of traditional Ukrainian and East European village women's songs. (Her first cd of this repertoire, Songs I Learned in Ukraine, is on the Global Village label.)
Mariana is visiting from Europe on a coveted fellowship from Princeton University's Art Atelier Program (curated by Toni Morrison). And she has one NYC gig, at Satalla, 37 W 26 St on Wed. March 9 at 10pm. At Satalla Mariana will premiere her new vocal and performance piece Without Ground - along with an ensemble featuring Anthony Coleman, Doug Wieselman and special guest Roberto Rodriguez.
Mariana travels in Ukraine almost every summer singing and recording village singers. Without Ground is based on ritual songs collected during her travels in Ukraine, as well as on the rusyn immigrant songs of Eastern Slovakia.
Mariana chats and we hear some of her field recordings, as well as a taste of a performance Mariana recorded with Coleman and Wieselman on Feb. 25 at WNYC. The WNYC session was engineered and mixed – beautifully - by Irene Trudel (who of course is also a WFMU dj!); more will be heard on WNYC’s Soundcheck on March 7.
Special thanks to Elena Park of WNYC.
