Avant Hard

Mute Records

1999

"Add N to (X)'s third album, Avant Hard, combines the noisy, analog aesthetic of their previous works with an increasingly sophisticated, structured approach. Though the group's overdriven, menacing synth sound prevails on songs like "Robot New York" and "Buckminster Fuller," unexpected touches like the operatic vocals on "Fyuz" and the go-go guitars on "Skills" provide a welcome contrast and round out the band's sonic palette. Avant Hard finds Add N to (X) expanding their emotional range as well. The album begins with theoretical pieces like the aptly named "Barry 7's Contraption" and segues into a brace of filmic songs like the horror-show creepiness of "Steve's Going to Teach Himself Who's Boss" to the robo-porn soundtrack that is "Metal Fingers in My Body." "Revenge of the Black Regent" and "Ann's Eveready Equestrian" take this trend toward drama and build it to near Wagnerian heights, blending synths, strings, choral voices, and sound effects into symphonies of urban decay. Finally, Avant Hard ends on a relatively gentle note, with a pair of songs -- "Oh Yeah Oh No" and "Machine Is Bored With Love" -- that explore Add N to (X)'s softer, even poignant side. "Machine" is based on samples from the early-'70s experimental band Egg, adding to a long list of musical pioneers -- including Joe Meek, Suicide, Kraftwerk, and Bruce Haack -- that the group borrows from and updates. With analog savvy and rock attitude, Avant Hard reveals itself as one of Add N to (X)'s finest moments."

Nico  I'm Not Sayin'   Favoriting I'm Not Sayin'  Immediate / Phillips  1965  An early Gordon Lightfoot song covered by a pre-Velvet Underground Nico. Gordon Lightfoot died this Monday May 1. "Gordon Meredith Lightfoot Jr. CC OOnt (November 17, 1938 – May 1, 2023) was a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist who achieved international success in folk, folk-rock, and country music. He is credited with helping to define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s. He has been referred to as Canada's greatest songwriter and his songs have been recorded by some of the world's most renowned musical artists. Lightfoot's biographer Nicholas Jennings said, "His name is synonymous with timeless songs about trains and shipwrecks, rivers and highways, lovers and loneliness" -- That same biographer had much to say about Nico's version of this song, find his fascinating page about it here: Nico sings Gord: The coolest Lightfoot cover of all Also, according to AllMusic: "Midway between her career as a European actress and model and her arrival in Andy Warhol's New York, Nico was introduced to producer Andrew Loog Oldham by Rolling Stones' guitarist Brian Jones. It was Oldham who cast her as a folksinger and chose Canadian Gordon Lightfoot's "I'm Not Sayin'" as her debut release. Jones played acoustic guitar on the session. Nico herself wasn't especially fond of the song, a bouncy Dylanesque number which had to be taken down to B-flat major before her own natural contralto voice could get to grips with it. Strings, arranged by David Whittaker, and a light-hearted glockenspiel added to the airy performance. Yet it is not so far a departure from Nico's work elsewhere in the mid-'60s -- with and without the Velvet Underground, she was first and foremost a balladeer." //// Also of note, Jimmy Page was a session musician at the time & also provided guitar on the track. //// Lastly, a promotional video from that time can be found here: Nico - I'm Not Sayin' (1965 video/"film promo")    0:05:06 (Pop-up)

Goat, John Mark Lapham  Under No Nation 12" Remix   Favoriting Seu Sangue EP  Rocket Recording  2023  GOAT are the Swedish collective known for wearing masks, bizarre costumes and incorporate afrobeat/worldbeat into their psych-influenced sound. The band are currently based in Gothenburg (famous for the metallic likes of At the Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquility), but claim to originate from a Norrbotten voodoo sect in Korpilombolo. Seu Sangue is s a collection of four remixes of cuts taken from the recent Oh Death album as well as a brand-new unreleased track. The remix conjures memories of early ‘80s hip-hop, The Tom Tom Club and ESG. Additional percussion is provided by former Swans member Thor Harris, whose presence is admittedly a little surprising seeing as his former employers weren’t exactly known for their levity or funkiness...It's good to have GOAT back!  *   0:14:19 (Pop-up)
Dawn Penn  You Don't Love Me (No No No)   Favoriting   Warner  1994  You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" is a song by Jamaican recording artist Dawn Penn, released in February 1994 as the first single from her first studio album, No, No, No (1994). Penn had originally recorded a version of Cobbs' 1960 song "You Don't Love Me" in 1967, incorporating elements of its music and lyrics. It is claimed that the Cobbs song was, in turn, based on Diddley's 1955 song "She's Fine, She's Mine". Thus, both are credited as songwriters on Penn's recording. In 1994, after a 17-year break from the music industry, she re-recorded a dancehall version of the song retitled "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)". Penn's 1994 version of the song became a commercial success worldwide, charting in the top 20 of several countries including #3 in the UK and has been covered since by many artists of note including Beyonce and Rihanna.    0:20:05 (Pop-up)
Ringo Starr  No-No Song   Favoriting Goodnight Vienna  Apple Records  1974  Goodnight Vienna is the fourth studio album by Ringo Starr. It was recorded in the summer of 1974 in Los Angeles, and released later that year. Goodnight Vienna followed the commercially successful predecessor Ringo, and Starr used many of the same players, including Billy Preston, Klaus Voormann, Robbie Robertson, Harry Nilsson, and producer Richard Perry. The title is a Liverpool slang phrase meaning "it's all over". The cover artwork for Goodnight Vienna was based on a still from the classic 1951 science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Starr's head replacing that of actor Michael Rennie shown standing behind the robot Gort. A television commercial, which featured a voiceover from John Lennon, depicted the cover's flying saucer (with Starr) over Los Angeles—landing on the roof of the Capitol Records Building in Hollywood.    0:23:25 (Pop-up)

The Ridiculous Trio Plays The Stooges

The Ridiculous Trio are from Chicago, and, as a unit, seem to have devoted their entire existence to covering the Stooges...performed entirely on drums, trombone and tuba! But it’s not just a novelty thing. The band comprises of three musicians who are regulars on the Chicago avant-garde/free-music scene. Trombonist Hagedorn explains his part in it: “With Iggy's tenor voice and my instrument being in the tenor range, I knew our timbres would match. Iggy approached his voice with a lot of patience and space, but used a full, aggressive sound that had plenty of nuance, and that's what I wanted to replicate in the trio... Sometimes I'd go between playing the lead guitar part to the vocal, switching back and forth as needed.”

Caroline, No - Instrumental Version   Favoriting

Pet Sounds (50th Anniversary Edition)

Capitol Records

1966

"Caroline, No" is a song by American musician Brian Wilson that was released as his first solo record on March 7, 1966 and, two months later, reissued as the closing track on the Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds. Written with Tony Asher, the lyrics describe a disillusioned man who reflects on his former love interest and the loss of her innocence. Musically, it is distinguished for its jazz chords and unusual combination of instruments, including bass flutes, 12-string electric guitar, and muted harpsichord. The words were inspired by a past girlfriend of Asher's named Carol Amen. He initially conceived the title phrase as "Carol, I Know", misheard by Wilson as "Caroline, No". Wilson produced the track in early 1966 at Western Studio with 12 session musicians who variously played harpsichord, flutes, guitars, basses, and vibraphone. Some of the percussion involved an empty water cooler jug struck from the bottom with a mallet. Wilson sped up the mix by one semitone to make his voice sound younger. The album version was edited to include a non-musical tag consisting of the sounds of Wilson's dogs barking and a passing train.

The Kills  Getting Down   Favoriting Midnight Boom  Domino  2008  Midnight Boom is the third album by indie rock band The Kills, released on March 10, 2008, through Domino Records. It was recorded at the Key Club Recording Company in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The title refers to the hours from midnight to 6 a.m., in which the band was at the creative peak, writing material for the album. The type of twosome who wear sunglasses indoors, Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart teeter on the edge of ridiculousness - but at least they are faithful to their idea of rock'n'roll. It's a stripped-down foray into a netherworld of sex, drugs and very late bedtimes. As ever, Hince and Mosshart play it like they mean it...    1:14:46 (Pop-up)
TRIO  Ya-Ya   Favoriting Trio  Mercury  1981  Trio was a German band also known as ZAM in Europe, formed in the town of Großenkneten in 1979. The band is most known for the 1982 song "Da Da Da" which was a hit in 30 countries worldwide. The song was originally written by Dorsey, C. L. Blast, Bobby Robinson, and Morris Levy in 1961 and was inspired by a children's nursery rhyme. It has been covered by numerous artists over the years and was a frequent fixture in early Beatles sets, with Lennon taking vocal duties. French versions were also recorded by Johnny Halliday and Petula Clark.    1:17:44 (Pop-up)
David Byrne  Poison   Favoriting The Catherine Wheel - The Complete Score  Sire Records  1981  The Catherine Wheel is an album by Scottish-American musician David Byrne, released in 1981 by Sire Records. It contains Byrne's musical score for choreographer Twyla Tharp's dance project of the same name. In some ways, The Catherine Wheel is David Byrne’s most overtly avant-garde work to date. It’s also his most rhythmically informed album, featuring two full-time percussionists, Yogi Horton and John Chernoff. Byrne handles most of the musical duties with contributions from a familiar circle of players (Brian Eno, Adrian Belew, Dolette McDonald, Steve Scales, Bernie Worrell). As to whether it offers a glimpse into what life after Talking Heads would look like for Byrne, the answer is yes....and no...    1:20:00 (Pop-up)
The Jesus and Mary Chain  Upside Down   Favoriting Psychocandy (Expanded)  Blanco Y Negro  1985  You can't have an uhuh or hey hey hey set without JAMC, there are so many examples to choose from! The album is considered a landmark recording: its combination of guitar feedback and noise with traditional pop melody and structure proved influential on the forthcoming shoegaze genre and alternative rock in general. Bubblegum pop wrapped in screetching noise. "Upside Down" sold out its initial pressing and ended the year by being placed at number 37 in John Peel's Festive Fifty. Fun fact about JAMC: Their first recordings came about when they bought a Portastudio in 1983 after their father lost his job in a local factory and gave the brothers £300 from his redundancy money. With both punk and skinhead members, they were enthusiastically championed by Sounds magazine writer Garry Bushell. They had sent him their demo tape early in 1981. Bushell who labeled them Oi!, was impressed enough to put two of their tracks on that year's Carry On Oi compilation: "Nation On Fire" and "Youth". In 1989 the band released their self-titled album, which presented a more AOR sound.[6] The second single from the album was the T. Rex-inspired song "So Alive", which became a hit, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, a feat no Bauhaus-related band or artist has achieved before or since. Die hard fans view this song as a sell out, but I say it's well deserved success!    1:27:14 (Pop-up)

Björk  Possibly Maybe   Favoriting Post  Elekra  1995  From Björk's 2nd full-length studio album. "The song details different stages of a breakup. Björk has said it was "the first unhappy song I wrote… I felt ashamed writing a song that was not giving hope". The melancholic piece was dedicated to her broken relationship with Stéphane Sednaoui, who, curiously, also directed the video. Rumours have persisted that Björk recorded the song in the nude, although this has not been publicly commented on. Björk was sued by British electronic musician Scanner for the uncleared sample of telephones ringing (from his album Mass Observation) at the start of the track. The situation caused her record label, One Little Indian, to retire all current copies of Post in the shops, and release a new version of the album that included a version of "Possibly Maybe" without the sample. Later on, when the issue was solved, the single version of the song included the sample again, as it appears in the music video. //// The B-side of single was "Vísur Vatnsenda-Rósu", taken from the 1994 album Chansons des mers froides by Hector Zazou. We've had quite the beach time here... No Babs tonight... A delayed start where everyone got to enjoy the robot picks... Lots of "no" songs... Lots of "yes" songs coming up... An interview w/ Konner Whitney of Whitney K. Folk-tinged tracks, a Ringo Starr song, and of course all the usual...

I have this thing that happens every so often, that is usually a good sign about a record, that while listening to it I think "this could have been on Slash in 82 without sticking out as an embarrassment" Mean Side is one of those, Those Darlins debut and Sauna Youth's Distractions are too.
Avatar 🏝 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
ultradamno:

Black Rooster is from around the same time as Mean Side and in that style...Fried My Little Brains is another.
