Get your mind outta the gutter!! We're tawkin' birthdays, heah! Richard Twardzik (92), gifted but star-crossed pianist who OD'ed on heroin at 24 while touring Europe with Chet Baker in '55; cellist Abdul Wadud (76) from Cleveland whose somewhat short discography belied the enormous influence he was to have on today's stars, such as Tomeka Reid, and bassist Percy Heath (100) of MJQ fame who played with just about everyone

' Richard Henryk Twardzik (April 30, 1931 – October 21, 1955) was an American jazz pianist who worked in Boston for most of his career.
Twardzik trained in classical piano as a child and made his professional debut at the age of fourteen. He was taught by Margaret Chaloff, the mother of baritone saxophone player Serge Chaloff. Twardzik recorded with Serge Chaloff and with Charlie Mariano. He worked with Charlie Parker on several occasions toward the end of Parker's life. Twardzik also played professionally with Chet Baker and Lionel Hampton. He recorded with Baker and Chaloff in 1954 and 1955.
In his teenage years, Twardzik became addicted to heroin. He died from a heroin overdose while on tour with Chet Baker in Europe. '

' Abdul Wadud (born Ronald Earsall DeVaughn; April 30, 1947 – August 10, 2022) was an American cellist known for his work in jazz and classical settings. Jazz musician and fellow composer Tomeka Reid hailed Abdul Wadud's "Camille" in a 2020 feature in the New York Times on music that one could play to make friends fall in love with the cello.
His son is the R&B singer Raheem DeVaughn.
Wadud died on August 10, 2022, at the age of 75. '
