Hi Bob. I remember when the Sandpipers were on Ninth Street West - an afternoon dance show. The bands that guested were mostly Hollywood rabble - The Doors, The Seeds, Music Machine - whoever was playing on Sunset that night. Well, when The Sandpipers sang they looked like my dad! Nice slacks, cardigan sweaters and polished shoes. Weirdly, even though I was totally absorbed in bands wearing striped pants and suede boots, I LOVED that song! It was all over the radio, which at the time was very segregated - Jefferson Airplane, then Frank Sinatra, then Leslie Gore, then The Yardbirds. Closer to WFMU that the crud you hear on the broadcast radio today. That's why I'm here, I guess.

I saw Ornette and Prime Time in 1982 at the Westwood Playhouse. The stage was decorated like a sit-com living room. It was the classic line up - two drummers, two bass players and Ornette in the middle going nuts. It was funny and wild. Not unlike an improbable dream.

ORNETTE COLEMAN

I would like you to know something about the music you are about to hear.
This music is made up of written and unwritten parts.
The players
have their written parts to play and the freedom to play any musical idea, providing they can return to the original part at will.
For example,
SOUND AMOEBA is written in 8 parts.
Each part is played solo and then all
together.
I call this form of playing "harmolodic."
It is a music that
fulfills one's musical views without being restricted to form.
This program is dedicated to ail those whose lives can be helped by sound.

I saw so much great music at the Mudd Club. Frankly, a lot more than CBGB. Like Captain Beefheart and Pere Ubu on the same bill.

That's hilarious! One time Captain Beefheart was guesting on the radio station down the street from my house. I intercepted him coming out the back door. I had him sign my copy of Trout Mask Replica in the parking lot. I was wearing some thrift store rag. Don, who was sitting down looked up at me and said "That's a nice jacket man! You know, I invented punk rock."

I went to the first night - X, Cramps, Dead Kennedys and Chrome. Strangely, I didn't have a very good time. It was the summer of 1980 and was tired of going to punk shows. I had been doing it since 1976 and was a little crispy around the edges.

Earlier that summer, I had seen Wall of Voodoo at Beyond Baroque in Venice. A very sinister vibe was casting it's spell that night. Wall of Voodoo stopped playing and the audience went nuts. Joe Nanini, the drummer stood in front of the crowd and baited the audience. "Motherfuckers meet me out side and I'll kick your ass!" Ah, those were the days.
