Speaking of marriage: I remember a running theme of MTM show was her seemingly hopeless single status. Her character never did marry, did she?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
Rich in Washington:

Our whole family would watch MTM every week. Still love catching it on the rerun channel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
Krys O.:

↳ Mr Fab @2:20
No, she didn't get married, but she had a lot of dates. She was dating Bert Convy in the episode I just watched. He was a longtime friend who was married to Beth Howland (Vera on Alice) and was getting a divorce. The best boyfriend Mary Richards had was Paul Sand as an IRS agent auditing her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember the idea that she was divorced was considered scandalous at the time so they just sort of wrote around it. Wasn't she supposed to be engaged but her fiancee broke it off, hence her move to Minneapolis?
Avatar 2:26pm
Mr Fab:

↳ Krys O. @2:23
Kudos to the producers for avoiding what is now such a cliche, the big TV wedding. This is a show about a single woman, and dammit, she's staying single.

Like the Bob Newhart show, set in Chicago, there is nothing really "Midwestern" about MTM, is there? No one eats perogies, mentions polka, speaks in an accent. Could be set anywhere, really...

She was dating a medical student who Richards was helping through medical school to her detriment. She broke it off and moved to MPLS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Rich in Washington:

every single week without fail when the scowling lady in the freeze-take in the opening credits would come on, my sister would yell "there's Mrs. Homola!", because the lady looked like our nextdoor neighbor.

JetBoy of Astoria:

These old MTM recordings are great. The guy doing the voiceover was one of the big news anchors in Minneapolis in the 70’s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
Krys O.:

↳ Rich in Washington @2:27
Great!

Seems there was a Mary and Rhoda TV movie in 2000 wherein it's revealed that Richards marries a Congressman after getting a degree in journalism. I've gotta see that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
Krys O.:

↳ JetBoy of Astoria @2:28
Hello, Jetboy! Yes, I was reading about Dave Moore when I found this.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm

↳ Krys O. @2:29
Wow. Somehow missed that. Reading about it now. It sounded pretty serious and short of what people today would call 'fan service'.

Ah. I was trying to imagine her - she seemed like a real character. Did the footage show her house with the impeach Nixon signs?
  2:43pm
JetBoy of Astoria:

I love that the woman who didn’t want her house filmed again did it by posting anti-Nixon signs. That was and remains a very wealthy part of the city, populated by rich liberals who stayed in the city rather than fleeing to the burbs, and the political sentiment remains the same.
