instigated by conversations lately i listened to the first 5 steely dan albums last week, in release order. you (Bob) asked what brings out such animosity toward them...
i think it's Fagen's voice, more than anything else. it did change, maybe as confidence grew? -not for the better, as is often the case when a singer's confidence grows... but also,
can't buy a thrill was Fagen on lead for only a couple tracks, countdown a few more, some co-leads... then more and more until it was pretty much only him by royal scam.
another thing is although their arrangements didn't necessarily get less creative, the detail within them very much did. the overall sound got slicker, but the nuances of each part diminished.
i feel like every subtlety was considered in making the first 2 albums, then gradually they relied more on just the basic composition and the sound quality.

coelacanth∅: Your analysis mostly nails it for me, although it's not exactly fair to saturate yourself in anything of which you want to be critical (Bach being an exception to the rule). On top of reliance on compositional models and Fagen's voice, I'd add other musical tics. Am I wrong that they squeezed a lot out of dotted note motifs?

Thank you for explaining,Dean but that doesn't apply here. i've listened to all these albums at least 20 x (royal scam) to 2-300x (can't buy a thrill) each.
... but also, i don't quite agree with your theory. it may be the case when you want to evaluate something; but not the case when i want to evaluate something.
... and, every time anyone evaluates something there are variables. there's no escaping that fact.
- but most importantly, why's Bach an exception?!

RE: Steely Dan.
Most bands/artists you don't like you just ignore, you don't bother wasting negative energy railing against them.
But this band beings out such strong feelings in people and the hate seems absurd and singular to me.
And it's not just Albini, this has been an ongoing thing and I find it puzzling, to say the least.
Of course, it makes those of us who dig them just dig in our heels.
Plus there's been a pro S.D. phenomenon happening in response lately.

I don't hate SD, and I think it's unfair to dismiss criticism of their work in a purely ad hominem way. For years I've been fascinated by my own inability to get their reputation. I'm not wasting negative energy; I'm genuinely interested in how objective musical content provokes divergent subjective responses. (Don't know Albini's contribution to all of this.)

The Bach example was a bit of hyperbole. There are some artists one imagines one could listen to 24/7 without exhausting one's attention.

In other words, the options aren't just celebrate or ignore. An example: for years I never got Jethro Tull. But I continued to pay attention to them, if only because of their curious reputation. Eventually, thanks to an interview with Ian Anderson, they came into focus for me. I now dig 'em. Well, the early stuff. I suppose I "hate" the later stuff.

coel: I binge, too, on an artist or a composer. And I enjoy doing comparative listening to, say, different quartets' renditions of the Debussy. But as a method for study, there are risks to using binging.

Codifying and reducing subjectivity goes to too many areas not pertaining to music at all, but rather fashion, both divisive and constructive social politics, bourgeois one-upmanship, the construction of identity, social power-exchanges, inculcated prejudice, egomania, fear, and artificial taxonomies based on criteria entirely external to music. They better codify tribal taboos and weaponization than they do music and its visceral reception. There's really only music, and how each listener responds to it. All the rest of that other stuff gets in the way of, and supplants, music. Depends on what you want to listen to more. The jibber-jabber, or the music.
