Can we please also add a bar cart and a one-lane bowling alley to the Continental Subway We can bring our own bowling shoes. Does anyone else remember the hot second in the 1980s when bowling alley shoes were A Thing? I remember the cool kids would fail to "return" them to the bowling alley. I still feel bad that I was too straight-laced to do this (and my Mom would have grounded me for life) but the local bowling alley near me had deliberately ugly/cool half-red, half-white shoes with a sort of white racing stripe separating the two colors the long way, and prominent sizes on the heel in a white rosette with heavy black print...

My very first job in the City after my schooling was downtown near the Wall Street Bull. I was flatass broke and only treated myself to take out lunch on Fridays, so I wouldn't have to schlepp my lunch kit to a club/bar. There was one place on Pearl Street called Yip's--may still be there--the cheapest fake Chinese by the pound or a flat rate plate for around $3. Anyway, they actually had the BEST fake shrimp I have ever had.

"His wife's stormy relationship with the Queen, and her subsequent dismissal from court, was central to his own fall. Incurring Anne's disfavour, and caught between Tory and Whig factions, Marlborough was forced from office and went into self-imposed exile. He returned to favour with the accession of George I to the British throne in 1714, but a stroke in 1716 ended his active career. "

The series was based on Churchill's history of his family. John Churchill's father was the first Winston (I think) in the line. After defeating the French at Blenheim, John was made the 1st Duke of Marlborough, and Blenheim (palace and estate) was created w/ public funds as a tribute to his momentous victory.
I've been there and the majesty of the place is indescribable, by me anyway.

Very cool. I think our favorite part of the Louvre when we went (jeez, more than six years ago now?) was the Egypt wing. Not that most of it shouldn't be sent right back to Egypt, but damn, it was impressive. And also well curated, unlike a lot of the European painting parts of the museum, which just jam as much as possible on the walls and figure you can sort it all out for yourselves.

In a Louvre visit, I remember dashing through some of those jammed salon-style galleries -- so many paintings high and low, and thinking how odd it was to be trying to beat the clock or get to a different target in the museum and jus' be hot-footing past such a substantial concentration of important Western art and art history...without a look.

I know what you mean! We were there eight hours. The camera battery died in Ancient Greece. And there were still huge unexplored areas. K8 probably thinks we dallied a little too long in the large-format European paintings, but Radeau de la Meduse! If the Pogues use it as an album cover, it gets some extra attention. Also, it's HUGE.
