Had one of the peak experiences of my life last night hearing Sun Ra Arkestra at White Eagle Hall here in Jersey City. They were great, of course. Amazing to note that Marshall Allen is 98 years old and still full of energy. I am proud to say I have been listening to SRA for the last 50 years since I first heard them at Town Hall in NYC in 1973 (a performance eventually released on the CD Concert for the Comet Kohoutek). Also great that they got a good turn out - one couple brought their son from the 7th grade. Talk about cool parents!

I’m pondering this statement. With no snark intended: is there a difference? I take it you’re saying that a regional museum might be proud of a good example of cubism but that doesn’t mean the Met would hang it alongside Monet.

As to the bias part: I’ve been worried that I only listen to things once and then if I like them I play them on the radio. 'Good' is informed by all kinds of things. 'Broadcasting' one's choices to others is a secondary consideration, but even then, it's 'for their consideration'. In the words of Duke Ellington, if it sounds good, it is good. Which does rather beg the question. (Unless I'm misusing "beg the question," not for the first time.)

Apropos of February, and maybe of the question of what is good, I enlisted some beef chili from the freezer to heat up and slip under the eggs, in the fight against the old breakfast ennui. It helped.

Looking at this collection of recently purchased material, I'm beginning to think that Bandcamp ought to list an 800-number, saying "Call this number if you have a problem using Bandcamp responsibly," just as the gambling ads do.

Hah! I somewhat controlled my bandcamp Friday by only buying from people who I've made eye contact with at some time, except for Sahel north Africa label that had a name your own price sale. Fortunately, I already have bought nearly their whole catalogue so minimal damage there.

Yes, I like that Mandel's prog show is only one hour, which means that since I listen from the archive I can usually get through it in 30 or 40 minutes (skipping listening to tunes I've over saturated on in the past).

fred, thanks for the tip. Speaking of expensive dance tickets, Batsheva is doing a several weeks residence at the Joyce. Usually, they do four or five days at BAM. We were both (!) looking forward to going, but holy wow -- tickets start around $120USD, easily double what they've gone for in the past. Dance should be valued more highly, but does charging Broadway prices constitute restorative justice?

My advice is to wait until the same choreographer comes without the Batsheva label. That strategy worked for me with Anne Teresa De Keermaeker: a show I very much wanted to see had tickets in the 80-120€ range (Paris Opera), and I reluctantly passed. 3 years later, I saw it twice at 20€ each (different venue with better sight)
