"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

His onetime best friend Richard Hell ends his memoir I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean Tramp with a sad tale about accidentally running into Verlaine on the sidewalk, outside the East Village’s Strand Bookstore, rummaging through the dollar bins. The two men chat, make awkward jokes, avoid saying anything the least bit personal, then stumble away in different directions. At a 2011 NYC literary event, Hell read this chapter to a hushed room, saying it had just happened the previous week. He sobbed all the way through. “We were like two monsters confiding, but that wasn’t what shocked me,” Hell wrote. “It was that my feeling was love.”

Captain Beefheart’s 10 Commandments of Guitar Playing
1. Listen to the birds
That’s where all the music comes from. Birds know everything about how it should sound and where that sound should come from. And watch hummingbirds. They fly really fast, but a lot of times they aren’t going anywhere...

I'm reading this playlist while listening to the Phil Schaap birthday broadcast. WKCR doesn't have archives!

I left the radio on when I feel asleep, and a great record woke me up at any 5:30. It was two unreleased takes of Django Reinhardt and André Ekyan doing Pennies From Heaven, on speed. The released version is relaxed, as you'd expect. These takes sounded like they were trying to pick up all the pennies while rushing for a train.

Well, Beefheart an Artist with a legitimately unique Vision - & as Yoko once said - an Artist has a right to expect perfection. Some degree of Megalomania may be required to get things realized in a World that as Nietzsche made explicit would kill us all without that palliative. Is it awful to think this Work we adore is married to flagrant Abuse ? It sure is. But - I think he got better. Fwiw.

It's an interesting issue, Rabbit. Like you, I have no problem appreciating the artistic results, I just think it behoves us to remember the circumstances of their creation and keep the 'Beefheart is a wonder' rhetoric a little in check. Similarly, Yoko Ono was an absolute cow, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate her artistic oeuvre.
