Well, at some point after the printing press became A Thing, mass playing card production really took off, while before that, cheapo sets were mass-produced. There were regional variations, but the original 4 suits from Germania were leaves (spades) hearts, bells, and usually something else; earliest fourth suit was acorns.

And then you had the Italian versions of playing cards, which used the current Tarot minor arcana suits. Mashups were historically inevitable, and at around the same time, divination oracle decks started to pop up like Lenormand decks (France) and Kipper decks (Germania) and the mother of all mashups, the Visconti Tarot, which had a partial Major Arcana with a more Xtian/Renaissance bend and more "royal" cards (8 of each suit, 1 for each gender). Eventually stuff split off and each went their own way over the years, and the expansion of the British Empire led to the adaption of the simplified version of the hearts, leaves, bells, and acorns, which eventually became hearts, spades, diamonds (needed something that had better edges for cheap printing on bad paper) and clubs (acorns). British card culture and modern gambling went one way, divination, another. Thank you for coming to my 2nd TED talk today and enjoy

And FWIW, "Tarocchi" decks are still available in Italy, and the card game is still played there. Also once found a card from a modern Tarocchi deck -- the Magician (Il Magio?) in a park in Astoria. I picked it up, contemplated what it was trying to say to me, and then put it in a crack in a tree's bark for the next person to find...

Yep, hearts were always hearts in the English/Germanic early playing card decks. The 4 Tarot suits seem to be what was up RE early Italian decks.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Threemoons 🌛🌕🌜:

If using modern playing cards, Cups=hearts and diamonds=pentacles/coins, but again, if you're looking for a direct Tarot/playing card overlay, it varies by region. My Estonian great aunt, whom I never met, apparently learned divination with a standard WW2 era playing card deck from Romany that she encountered during the human clusterfuck of that war, while en route from Estonia to Gaeslingen, Austria (huge DP camp there).

Leaves ~ Spades (as much a Leaf share as a Shovel) = Swords: Air Element

Acorns ~ Clubs (now this explains maybe that fleur de lys pattern for a 'club' ??) = Rods : Fire Element

Hearts stayed Hearts which is Cups : Water Element

- that leaves Bells became Diamonds = Pentacles : Earth Element... An unlikely transition ? explained by Printing necessities...

Yeah, if you look at the earliest playing cards that were commercially made, they were of cheapest quality and roughest print. Needed defined edges that could be easily whacked out at a woodblock shop, only black and red ink, etc. FWIW the first commercially produced woodblock religious books also only had black and red ink; red was reserved for the section header starting letters.

Messers are these horrible broad-bladed swords designed for use against mail. Fencers hate them. They're like the nine-headed flail of the sword world. upload.wikimedia.org...
