From the beginning, Toms music was about dreams.

Really sorry to hear this. I was lucky to have seen Television live. His interplay with Richard Lloyd reminded me a lot of John Cipollina/Gary Duncan. Verlaine was one of those players you could identify in a couple of notes

He was a funny one. Whether by design or shyness, he was not a talker. But oh, could he write!

I was a little too young to catch them at the onset. But once I knew of them I was enamored, fully enthralled.

It's true. No one ever played guitar in this way before or after he showed up. And his writing and song structure; it's so great. I only saw Television once in a place where the sound sucked. I'm usually pretty stoic about this stuff but I guess, for me, this is like a really important light getting snuffed out. Feels like somebody punched me in the gut.

The first time they played in L.A. I missed them(I saw Iggy Pop the night before and didn't feel like going out two night in a row) One of the big regrets of my life. I NEVER missed then again.

I did see him with Patti Smith however.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am

I saw Tom eleven times, but it will never be enough.

"Always" ... the band Alvvays has a recent song called "Tom Verlaine" that is not about him, which is elliptical just like a TV song.

I was fortunate in that I saw a Television reunion show at the Fillmore in SF in the 2000s--excellent show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am

The second and last time I saw them was at the Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA in 2017. Very few people in that audience seemed to know of them. Due to that, I was able to score a spot in the very front, a highly unusual occurrence for me.

You know, they were always the same. They were so remarkable in that respect. They didn't pander. We saw them at The Great American Music Hall in SF sometime in the aughts and they sounded exactly the same as the did in the late 70's.

Tom did some great solo shows in the 90s. I recently stumbled upon a live audience recording CD from the Bowery Ballroom I believe--great stuff, very dreamy.
  12:45am
pp:

It's all elliptical with TV. Patti Smith's daughter announced Tom's passing, who's late father was Fred Smith, but not the Fred Smith bassist in Television. The media notes that Tom was known by having David Bowie cover one of his songs, yet Gaylord Fields coaxes Tom to spin records on WFMU, Gaylord himself never playing Bowie on air, until his last day. I don't think he played Fame.
