I (and many in my generation) discovered John Cooper Clarke 10 years ago through the Arctic Monkeys' adaptation of Clarke's "I Wanna Be Yours" into a song for their album AM. John Cooper Clarke was quite positive about the 'songification' of his poem.

Through my contacts at Yorkshire TV I got tickets to watch a recording of a special Christmas edition of Pop Quest, a quiz show presented by Mike Read & Sally James.
The show was never made because of a strike by technicians. According to the internet Les Gray, Jonathan King, Time Rice & Jimmy Pursey were due to be on the panel.

However before the strike, earlier in the day, a recording was made in a studio set up as a disco setting. There were various celebrities interspersed with dancing students - including me. The celebrities set questions to Mike Read. I remember Les Gray, Wreckless Eric and John Cooper Clarke! I need to research who else was there. The show was never broadcast.

In July 2013, Clarke was awarded an honorary doctorate of arts by the University of Salford in "acknowledgement of a career which has spanned five decades, bringing poetry to non-traditional audiences and influencing musicians and comedians." Upon receipt, Clarke commented: "Now I'm a doctor, finally my dream of opening a cosmetic surgery business can become a reality."
