@tim abdellah: May I tap your linguistic expertise? I'm writing a poem, not exactly a macaronic, but it does use a constellation of foreign (i.e., non-English) words. Rather than ask if word X means Y, I'll just ask what they mean:

ميسون
خبيزة
  8:16pm
Dean:

OT, RIP Mike Davis: https://www.npr.org/2022/10/26/1131578207/writer-truck-driver-meatcutter-and-prophet-of-compassion-mike-davis-dies-at-76

Oh - love 'City of Quartz' - related living in SantaBarbara if not LA.
Avatar 🇰🇷 8:21pm
Listener Gregory:

@Dean, I submitted those words to Goggle Translate, and it claims they mean:

give-freely
raiser-of-hell

What could that even mean???
Avatar 8:24pm
tim abdellah:

@Dean - I know ميسون as a female name. خبيزة in Moroccan is a sort of leafy green that I guess is called "mallow" in English. Google translates it as "hibiscus", but I think a different variety of mallow is used in Moroccan cuisine.
  8:25pm
Dean:

@LG: Thank you very much, Google Translate. Not even close.

@time: On the nose! Maisun (mason?) is a female name, and khobiza is a weedlike green that Mediterranean chefs saute and stew. Perfect. Thank you!
  8:26pm
Dean:

Khobiza and hibiscus are of the same genus. I point out as much in the poem.

  8:31pm
Dean:

Thanks, @tim. It's based on details of a special moment provided to me in an interview with one of my workshop classmates. The assignment was to write a poem based on such a moment. Hers involved travel in Israel and a meeting with a Palestinian woman.
  8:32pm
Dean:

IOW, I have no personal attachment to the topic other than the interview.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:33pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Gary:

He didn't sing Ca Plane Pour Moi! He reportedly didn't show up day of recording or was late
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Gary:

Lou Deprijck, who wrote the song (and I think produced the album?) had to sing it
  8:37pm
Dean:

News to me! Much like the record my stupid band issued. Alex Ferguson of ATV was supposed to join us, but he chose instead to sleep in. Of course, nobody buys our record with the mistaken notion that Ferguson is on it. For that matter, nobody buys our record.

Gary:

Whelp, now I'm gonna be grabbing TWO things from discogs after the show ... thanks, Dean!
  8:49pm
Dean:

@WR: I first learned of him reading New Left Review decades ago. Many of his contributions to NLR ended up in the fat tome City of Quartz. I'd recommend that book, particularly if you are familiar with Los Angeles.
  8:50pm
Dean:

@Gary: Somewhere I have the digital files for that stupid single. Don't buy it. I have a handful of copies left, and I'd gladly send you one for free if I could find them. Same for the files, which I've somehow misplaced (though Tony Coulter has them, too).

tim abdellah:

Doing the Embarrassment Rock! 🤣🤣 It looks great, though!
  8:55pm
Dean:

I've always found this comment about our single--"Some copies in picture sleeve, but usually found sleeveless."--bizarre. We pressed 200? We sat around the kitchen table and glued the covers for all of them. Some covers were white, some manila. Maybe the other guys from Flip Side secretly pressed more copies? I can't imagine why they would have done that at the time.

I actually heard a number of Bernstein's Concerts for Young People *in person*. My grandmother took me a few times. They were really incredible, and very entertaining. If we had the kids' television structure then that we have now, I think he would have been a big star among the under-10 crowd.

Because there were cameras at the concerts, I used to pose, looking super serious... when I remembered to. My pose paid off, because I appeared in an audience shot on a PBS broadcast of a concert for like 5 seconds. I ran around the house yelling at everyone, "I was on TV! I was on TV!" But of course, by the time anyone else got there, I was long gone, and I now wonder if they thought I had made the whole thing up.
