The thing that always strikes me about Nuggets is that these songs were only a few years old when the album was released but it seemed as if they came from a completely different geological era. In many ways the songs sound more contemporary now than they did in the early 70's.

About the influence of Nuggets on punk, here's a bit from the book Love Goes to Buildings on Fire:

[Richard] Hell, who’d never studied music, was a fan of the Stooges. [He and Tom Verlaine] shared a love of the Velvet Underground; for the tight, mid-’60s British Invasion rock of the Stones, the Beatles, the Yardbirds, and the Who; and for the gnarly mid- to late-’60s American garage rock of bands like the Seeds and the Standells. Their taste for the latter had been stoked recently. Verlaine bought a box of old singles from a Hare Krishna kid in Washington Square, and also picked up the double-LP anthology titled
Nuggets, released in the fall of ’72. A hard-boiled mix of the familiar and the forgotten, it was compiled by a rock critic, musician, and record-store clerk named Lenny Kaye, who called the music “punk-rock” in the liner notes. Like Harry Smith’s 1952 Anthology of American Folk Music—also curated by an erudite, record-collecting New Yorker—it caught the ears of many musicians. It was a between-acts staple on the sound system at Max’s, where Hell and Verlaine would sometimes hang out, nursing drinks and rubbernecking, trying to make the scene.

The version of “No Time Like the Right Time” on the Sire reissue sounds like it’s fake stereo with audience applause tagged on the front. It was probably sourced from that later “live” Blue Project LP. I’m guessing that version was in the original Nuggets as well and not the single version?

In a weird reversal, I actually was purchasing volumes of "Pebbles" before I was able to score that Sire re-issue of Nuggets. I started buying Pebbles when I was in high school and got most of them in NYC. But the first one I found was in the import section of a Sam Goody! I think "Back From the Grave" really upped the ante as far as these comps when -- no more mastering from cassettes, at the wrong speed, out of phase, and such. So great! That said, no matter how young, sarcastic, "provocative," and/or "punk" I thought I was, I downright hated the artwork on those Back from the Grave comps!
