With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers

Favoriting September 25, 2022: Rivers Deep
Born 99 years ago today in El Reno, Oklahoma, Samuel Carthorne Rivers was a multi-instrumentalist of tremendous power and originality, playing tenor and soprano sax, flute, piano, bass clarinet, and viola, and somehow found time to compose hundreds of works for solo, trio, 64-piece orchestra, and so much more. We celebrate him with nearly 5 hours of his music. (R.I.P. Pharoah Sanders and Anton Fier)

Hello Stork and club-goers. The plague finally caught up to me, so I’m taking this one from the plush velvet isolation booth upstairs, sipping Passaitussin* from a teacup, cos a melted throat can’t be sore.

* Passaitussin DM
2oz Glen Passaic
2oz automatic transmission fluid (ATF)
2oz acetone
1 Demerara sugar cube
Wedge lemon

Swirl GP, ATF, and acetone in a saucepan over low heat until shimmery, pour over sugar cube in a teacup, and garnish with lemon.

Rivers had a short stay in Miles' band-I've read that Miles was very unhappy when Trane left his band (can you blame him), cycled through a few sax players, waiting for Wayne Shorter to join (who was in Art Blakey's band and had to wait to be able to move to Miles'). They seem to mostly have been holding actions-Rivers was more "out" than Miles had been accustomed to at this point in his career.

I see Carol played a longish piece by Daona this morning. Excellent, I'll give it a listen later on today.

chresti, missed where I live in Nova Scotia, but the other end---Cape Breton Island, where most of my people are from---got whacked hard. State of Emergency, the Canadian Army called out to help, pretty devastated from the pictures I've seen.

I really liked the “Flame” song. Playlist says Rivers played piano on that one? That’s amazing how he’s proficient at two totally different instruments

Yeah, he really liked playing piano - you can hear it when he plays. Definitely not his main axe, but yet another fascinating dimension to him.
