The last I heard from my friend, he was otherwise occupied as he had just been downsized a few years from retirement, and that was the focus of our emails and phone calls...He said he was taking a few days to just run the numbers with his wife, also retired so they're sweating bullets over heating costs and the fact that their one car is 19 years old....

He was staying in an apt. just above a pub and so quickly became a regular there and used sport talk to break the ice with the locals, who adopted him enthusiastically. They asked him which sports he followed (baseball, U.S. football, basketball), and he asked the same (football). In all innocence, he asked, "What about cricket?" "CRICKET?! We're fucking Scottish!" Good times!

And, here in NYC, I'm already getting notice that electric bills will go up 25% and heating gas 30%. Heating is included in my building but I have no doubt that we will get an assesment on the maintenence/monthly fees for that. Cooking gas has already gone up noticeably.

I only use the AC in my bedroom, I have all LED lights in the place (actually a real gamechanger), and thank G-d my fridge is fairly efficient. RE the gas -- I'd be rather F'd if I had a standalone house with an oil heater. The assessment is the one that needs to be planned for as that may appear as a one-time charge...I've seen ones pushing almost $1K when we've dealt with flood damage in the basement, boiler issues, etc. The cooking gas is a bit of a surprise only because they've raised the minimum delivery charge and cost of one therm--to give you an idea, there have only been a few times in the past few years where I've used 2 therms, and I cook a LOT. Still, going from $18 to around $35 for the delivery fee on that first therm is going to be a hardship for folks who are on a tight budget--that extra $15 or so means a hell of a lot of rice, beans, and cheap greens/veggies and subsidized dairy.

It was laughable, really -- milling in a crowd of Hungarians and Italians (NYC-Budapest-Rome because it was so much cheaper), when uniformed officials approached me and said, "You are the Americans?" "Ulp?" "Come right this way! We have a special passport check set up for you right over here! Enjoy this beverage while you're at it!"

The lovely staff gave him a birthday dram from a 30 year old Speyside in that price region. He kindly let me have a taste (though he hogged the rest himself) and wow, the difference was remarkable. More complex, rounded and deeeep. Bit like hand rolled charas from Parvati Valley in the Himalaya....but that is another story.

The last I heard from my friend, he was otherwise occupied as he had just been downsized a few years from retirement, and that was the focus of our emails and phone calls...He said he was taking a few days to just run the numbers with his wife, also retired so they're sweating bullets over heating costs and the fact that their one car is 19 years old....

He was staying in an apt. just above a pub and so quickly became a regular there and used sport talk to break the ice with the locals, who adopted him enthusiastically. They asked him which sports he followed (baseball, U.S. football, basketball), and he asked the same (football). In all innocence, he asked, "What about cricket?" "CRICKET?! We're fucking Scottish!" Good times!

And, here in NYC, I'm already getting notice that electric bills will go up 25% and heating gas 30%. Heating is included in my building but I have no doubt that we will get an assesment on the maintenence/monthly fees for that. Cooking gas has already gone up noticeably.

I only use the AC in my bedroom, I have all LED lights in the place (actually a real gamechanger), and thank G-d my fridge is fairly efficient. RE the gas -- I'd be rather F'd if I had a standalone house with an oil heater. The assessment is the one that needs to be planned for as that may appear as a one-time charge...I've seen ones pushing almost $1K when we've dealt with flood damage in the basement, boiler issues, etc. The cooking gas is a bit of a surprise only because they've raised the minimum delivery charge and cost of one therm--to give you an idea, there have only been a few times in the past few years where I've used 2 therms, and I cook a LOT. Still, going from $18 to around $35 for the delivery fee on that first therm is going to be a hardship for folks who are on a tight budget--that extra $15 or so means a hell of a lot of rice, beans, and cheap greens/veggies and subsidized dairy.

"Ulp?" "Come right this way! We have a special passport check set up for you right over here! Enjoy this beverage while you're at it!"

More complex, rounded and deeeep. Bit like hand rolled charas from Parvati Valley in the Himalaya....but that is another story.
