Favoriting September 11, 2022: Tintinnabulously Fabulous
Today’s fiasco will contain about three fourths Arvo Pärt music, celebrating the Estonian composer and inventor of the compositional technique known as Tintinnabuli on his 87th birthday. Plus a short and sweet tribute to the short and sweet recording career of organist and Little Rock, Arkansas-native Roosevelt "Baby Face" Willette - born in 1933 or thereabouts, and known mainly for the swinging, soulful sides he cut with Grant Green in the early sixties.

Hadn't heard about this Metheny-really cool!
(way back, when I was taking jazz guitar lessons (unsuccessfully), my teacher took me to the Village Vanguard to see Jim Hall. Hall came over to our table between sets (my teacher had studied with him), and spent most of the time raving about Metheny, with whom he'd just played. "Lots of gadgets and electronics, but boy can he play", or something along those lines.

I’ve noticed what I think is that same horsehair sound when Fratres is played live by New York City Ballet’s orchestra, for the piece ‘Liturgy’ by Christopher Wheeldon (his best, IMO). Anyone know what that is? Is it the musician’s breathing?
Avatar 1:43pm
Stork:

@listenmissy: I suspect it's both breathing and the sound of close-miked, low volume bowing - the Quartet may be leaning into that sound as well - only they know.

@Fred, he primarily works with the Royal Ballet and, more recently, musical theater (An American In Paris, MJ The Musical.) I’ve mixed feelings about his work - when he first starting choreographing (with NYCB) he showed a lot of innovation and promise. In addition to Liturgy, he also set a piece called Polyphonia to Ligeti. (He made a piece called After the Rain, set to Pärt‘s Spiegel Im Spiegel that, like the music it uses, is overplayed. Every company does it these days, and too much. Though I admit the first time I saw it, with the dancer he created it for, Wendy Whelan, I found it extremely moving.)

Looks like Wheeldon is indeed having his work performed only in high-end places I hate: very expensive, with poor visibility. Venues where the point is to be seen, not to see

@listenmissy: I guess I go for quantity these days. I missed contemporary dance so much during lockdown I now see >50 shows a year. Forking 100€ to barely see a show is just not worth it to me

@fred: I too like de Keersmaeker but haven’t seen her work in many years. I’m familiar with Hofesh Shechter in name only. The company sounds like it would be a good fit for the kind of programming the Brooklyn Academy of Music does. (That’s where I’ve seen de Keersmaeker, along with Batsheva, who used to perform there every other year, and the Forsythe Dance Company before William Forsythe left it to return to ballet.)
