Got to see Van Ronk once (I have no idea why, didn't really know much about him at the time, must have been a better informed friend). Was a fun show, long, long ago.

Larry, is this the way forward? I hope so.

I never got to see him in person, but Van Ronk has always been a fave singer of mine

@David - I don't know which version. I haven't seen the movie in years

WR:

Hi Larry and Testifiers!

Was struck how much the photo of Joni Mitchell in the Drummer email this morning echoed what she looked like for her recent Newport Folk Festival performance.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey WR! That was a 1964-era pic where she's holding either a ukelele or a tenor guitar
Avatar 3:28pm
David Shortell:

What was the deal with that psychopath Yogi Joe who harassed Joni at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Funky16Corners:

I don't know. I've seen that film, and she recovered nicely considering how antithetical that mudpit was to her vibe
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
Funky16Corners:

The melody to this song is so goddamned haunting, and the lyrics are deeply sad
Avatar 3:34pm
Vincent The Soul Chef:

Read the book "Girls Like Us", which is a three way bio of Joni, Carly Simon and Carole King... kind of difficult to follow because the author jumps between subjects a lot, but still an interesting read.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Funky16Corners:

I still want to get that. I have a biography of Joni but it's not very well written (considering what an interesting life she's led)
Avatar 3:37pm
Vincent The Soul Chef:

I went through a phase of audiobooks for a while back in 2008 or so, soaking up lots of biographies. I may launch an audible account one of these days and get back into it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
Funky16Corners:

I can't deal with audiobooks. my attention span isn't built for them. My wife goes through them quickly.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Brian in UK:

1970 at the Royal Festival Hall. Might have been her first appearance over here. Bit too young to appreciate it fully.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
WR:

So far I've only bought the Vol. 1 Joni Mitchell archives. Has anyone read the Joni biography: Joni: the creative odyssey of Joni Mitchell by Katherine Monk? Just put it in my queue at the library.
Avatar 3:40pm
Vincent The Soul Chef:

@Larry: I'm the exact opposite. Despite being able to read since I was four, I find it hard to focus on words in a book. I want to look at the entire page, causing me to lose focus
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Funky16Corners:

I have Vols 1&2, both greatm=, but I eagerky anticipate Vol 3, getting into the electric years. I haven't seen that bio
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Funky16Corners:

@Vincent - I think I have a deeply ingrained need for paper books. I don't do well with e-books, either
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
doctorjazz:

I did see Phil Ochs once in a Village club. He talked more than he played, not too coherent, seemed depressed. Couldn't predict what happened, but wasn't shocked when I heard.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Brian in UK:

Got mixed feelings about any biography. Auto or otherwise. Saying that I am reading a second one of Stefan Zweig.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Funky16Corners:

@WR - I just ordered that book
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doc - I think after a certain point in the 70s Ochs was on an uninterrupted downward slide, mentally
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
Brian in UK:

doctorjazz, you cannot account for your heroes.
Just bought tickets for Dollar Brand in Cardiff this October. Yipee!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
WR:

I'm ok with audio books if I'm travelling, which is very rare the last few years. Otherwise I strongly prefer paper. I have some ebooks but have not had much success at reading them.

Doc, I would very much have liked to see Ochs, but I understand, except early on, that it would likely be a happy sad encounter.

When I saw Van DyKe Parks a few years ago, while acknowledging the sad ending, he spoke very positively about working with him.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Brian in UK:

I always had difficulty with Joni's high notes. But from Court & Spark onwards the cigarettes had kicked in.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
doctorjazz:

Abdullah Ibrahim will be at a club in NY end of August, but I'll be out of town that week, very sad (not about vacation, but of definitely see him again if I could).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Funky16Corners:

I'd like to spend a week or two interviewing Van Dyke Parks, about his own music and his collaborations
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Funky16Corners:

@Brian - I marvel at her spectacular range and control.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
doctorjazz:

I used to have trouble with her vibrato, but I've grown accustomed to her voice.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Funky16Corners:

Interestingly, one of her early influences was Buffy Sainte Marie, with one of the most powerful vibratos in Canada!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
WR:

Wow, I might try seeing Ibrahim. Have not seen him.

Larry, Parks was very personable and open when I saw him. He warmly invited people to come chat with him at the merch table after the show. Unfortunately it was a weekday night and my partner wasn't willing to hang around. He used to be active on Twitter, I don't use it much so haven't noticed if he still is.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Brian in UK:

WR VDP produced Phil's last album beautifully. The only one where he reflected on his life & my favourite. His brother Michael made the comment that when you are singing so much about other peoples troubles you are avoiding focusing on your own life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm

Mr. Parks is still active on Teitter.

I didn't like Buffy St Marie's wide vibrato either, no that you mention it.
WR-he's not as energetic as he was years back (who is-not I), but i'd still strongly recommend catching him.
He's at The Blue Note 8/23-8/28 (I'll be in the Berkshires).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Mike Sin:

Very much enjoying the show. When I was much younger, Joni Mitchell, very much like Dylan, was one of those artists that I came to after hearing so many cover versions of their great songs.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Mike!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Funky16Corners:

I love the version of this sung in Alice's Restaurant, at the funeral.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
Funky16Corners:

I'll be 60 in a few weeks, and it's taken me nearly 50 years to understand as much as I do about Joni Mitchell (meaning I know there's more work to be done, though it seems unfair to call it "work")
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Brian in UK:

Larry, the very thought that a woman can sing about emotions in a sophisticated manner. A door opener.
Avatar 🥁 4:13pm
