Favoriting Discotech Underground with Kip Brown: Playlist from July 21, 2022 Favoriting

Discotech Underground is actually two...two...two shows in one!

The first half is a "Happy Hour" of sorts (because it's five o'clock somewhere, right?), spinning the kinds of sounds you might have heard at a real, authentic 1960's DISCOTECH as cool cats and swingin' chicks danced the night away in their mod threads and mini skirts to hard-driving sounds under the flashing lights! The only thing missing are the cage dancers...but we're working on it!

The second half is for when you head home after a wild night, and ease in with the heady, trippy, mind-expanding sounds of a groovy free-form UNDERGROUND rock radio station that digs deep into their library and blows your mind all over again!

So, I was doing some cleaning at my storage building yesterday and after going through a few boxes, I found seven plastic 45 adapters! Not the little yellow plastic single record ones, the dome adapters that fit on turntables! How the hell did I end up with that many??

Kip, I have 3 and use them only. I have a few of the VERRRY old metal silver ones you fit in 45s, but those are SO hard to get in and out of 45s, so was glad when they made plastic swirl ones.

Clark-We were talking about The Third Booth on Instagram the other day...I have found so many copies of that 45 that play with so much distortion you can't even make out the song!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
Discotech Underground:

neveract-FINALLY getting around to processing them and adding them to the collection! I've been busy since I got back!
Avatar 🥁 5:14pm

Blue Things! I'll say it again, nothing wrong with 60's RNR in Kansas when I grew up. Proof in the puddin!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
Discotech Underground:

Clark-I've had it before...a clear playing vinyl pressing that sounds much better than the styrene Independence 45s. It must not have taken music to destroy the grooves on those pressings because I've had mint looking ones that play terrible!
Avatar 5:16pm
Dr. Mindburger:

I've had a bunch of copies. Never had a distorted one yet. Lucky me. BUETHINGS RULE!
Avatar 🥁 5:16pm

Kip, it blew me away when I put that original 45 on and heard the song for it's real worth!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:17pm

Avatar 🥁 5:23pm
neveract:

.. I didn't buy very many 45's in my youth because they usually sounded pretty bad. So I never collected them later. I've always wanted to spend as much time digging for vinyl before someone else beat me to something good..lol. But I've always WANTED to buy 45's; I just don't know much about them. How do I tell good stuff from bad stuff (styrene vs vinyl 45's)?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
Discotech Underground:

Neveract-Vinyl 45's tend to be somewhat flexible and taper out towards the edge. Styrene 45's are more rigid and have a flat edge. Vinyl tends to be more durable and can withstand repeated plays better than styrene 45's. Styrene 45's tend to sound distorted when the grooves start getting worn out.

Thanks Kip!!

I know a lot of folks do, but I couldn’t imagine just buying LPs OR 45s - I love em both dearly, and always want both around me!!

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:33pm

Sure thing, Bob!...I'll get right on that!...

The thing I have trouble with are records that came from a house were someone smoked. I have to let them air out first before I add them with the rest of the collection.
Avatar 🥁 5:34pm
MOM WHIG:

KIP - Yes, the smoke is the WORST!! I am lucky not to have any of them.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
Discotech Underground:

I bought some loose company sleeves this weekend that came from a smoker's house and they are airing out in the backroom now before I add them to my collection records. Blech...

Mom-I usually just leave them set out on my enclosed back porch for a few days which helps neutralize the smoke smell. Just being out of that environment helps them heal and recover from it.

Best way to de-smoke a place is to buy a tub of Ona gel, fill some mason jars, and place them around the house. No toxins, just essential oil and polysorbate 20 (emulsifier).

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:44pm

Paper tends to absorb smoke odors and hold onto them but when you get them out of the environment and give them time to sit the smell goes away eventually.
