A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I believe "robot" means "slave" in Czech, which caught on because of the play by Karel Čapek, "R.U.R."

Robota is the Polish word for work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm

Was the word Robot Copyright during this recording? They seem unusually dedicated to pronouncing it wrong.
Avatar 9:10pm
Mr. X:

It's worse than pronouncing "Batman" as "Batm'n."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm

I think the connotation is more serf than slave. BTW-I come from a long line of Slavic serfs.

Avatar 9:12pm

Makes sense, Krys O. I think "slave" is probably the American interpretation, since we lack familiarity with serfdom here.

These Slavic pronunciations of 'robota' are kinda sorta similar to the 'row-butt.'

The Readymen are a Eugene band, who are essentially the same members of "S.O.L. 17," (Sick of Life at 17), a band that rocked the hallways of Cottage Grove High School when we were all just wee children. But The Readymen were actually good, and toured a lot. The remaining members of The Readymen - two brothers, JP and Alex Otto - are now in a band called Broloaf, and live in Arizona somewhere.

Wait! There was a band between SOL 17 and The Readymen: The Minimals! They played around and had a tape, and I really wish I had a copy of that tape, now. They used to play "half-sized" instruments for their encores.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Austin Rich:

I remember the day the SOL 17 kids got permission to use the CGHS auditorium, and they put on a show during lunch. They played a bunch of covers, originals, scared most of the other staff and students, and left a memory to last a lifetime.

When I was in High School, my first girlfriend was the cousin of Jay Farrer, the "not Wilco" part of Uncle Tupelo. She got all the singles and albums as they came out, and we WORSHIPED these albums in the early 90's. They sound a little corny now, but I still love them.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm

UT do very funny country covers of Black Flag songs, that was my first exposure to Black Flag.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:24pm

Aside from some stuff we don't talk about from the early 90's, I love EVERYTHING by Devo.
  10:26pm
Heather:

Oh no. I don't know of this 90s Devo and I'm not going to Google it. I love what I know of theirs and I know a decent lot. I'll keep it at that for my collection.
Avatar 10:27pm
Mr Fab:

Haha the “Shout” album, everyone hated it when it came out. Around ‘83 or ‘84? This sounds not bad, tho.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Austin Rich:

I suspect I might like "Smooth Noodle Maps" again, but at the time? Yikes! But I only heard "Shout" around 1990, and by then, it was cool again!

I guess I should give '90's Devo another chance, but... there's just so many great early albums.

I saw man or Astro man? do a live show at the old Rhino Records store, and they used to play those old movie samples in between songs. One sample referenced a “charnel house“, and they asked us if we knew what it was, because they had no idea. Me and a few other people said it meant “slaughterhouse”. They were shocked! “We’ve been asking every crowd that and no one knows what it means!”

I'm not sure that The Appendixes are still together, but their body of work is worth checking out. They used to put on great shows, where they would bring out a huge, unwieldy tape machine, mic it, and make a point of turning it on for the "drum" tracks.
