JR, I've seen him a bunch, too. One really cool show was his 70th bday party at the VA where a bunch of bands played and he and his current band with his son headlined. He was hanging out on the porch watching the bands all afternoon and evening. They also had a little exhibit inside with a bunch of old Elevators photos and memorabilia. It was toooooo cooooool!!!!

When I was in a heavy metal band in high school in Houston, our guitarist’s dad got us into the Elevators. He had some worn out records he would bust out when someone said something was psychedelic, he was like “that shit ain’t psychedelic, sit down, listen to this, learn something.”

Most memorable show is at Psych Fest 2015 - 13th Floor Elevators reunion with Tommy Hall, first ever reunion with Hall. Also Psych Fest 2013, Roky along with Moving Sidewalks!

For my money - probly the Greatest Rawk Singer in many respects. The pipes for starters - but also coming from a place - & getting to one - like simply no one else.
Listening to the Elevators Live in SF @ the Avalon 1966 ...I have to think - damn but - they really were ahead of everyone else in some really tangible ways - just the Best.
& that Roky endured what he did - & had an entirely other Solo phase conveying something else quite distinct from TommyHall's sort of Masonic psychedelic evangelism ...there aren't a lot of comparisons.

Suffice to say the 13th Floor Elevators were truly dedicated to evangelizing for psychedelic drug use - in mid1960s Texas (let that sink in) - to an extent that reportedly made even the Grateful Dead incredulous when they made it to SanFrancisco. With the results you could predict.

Back in the 80s I found a copy of the Live album at a thrift store. It had Tommy Hall's autograph on it. decades later I was able to get Roky and John Ike Walton to autograph it!
