The Lumineers are (perhaps deservedly) derided for their "Ho, Hey" song that kinda became the standard faux folksy mason jar rock anthem. But I saw them at Newport Folk Fest and they said "we're gonna play the song. take video of it, whatever. then please put your phones away for the rest of the set." then they went into the crowd to cover "Subterranean Homesick Blues." They're OK in my book.

Frank, it does depend. There's a guy who plays my dive on Tuesday nights who, when it's slow, not only indulges but semi-encourages "stump the singer" requests. Hilarity tends to ensue. All in good fun. If there's a crowd, though, we leave him encouragingly to his work.

It's interesting to hear all these raves about the McCartney show. I saw him at MSG a few years back and it was....fine. Not bad, not great, just...fine. For my money the English act of that era that still delivers just about every time are Pete and Roger and their band that they still call the Who, though it certainly isn't the Who of your childhood. Well unless you're in your 20s.

It weird how for a period in the late 1970s everyone was compelled to take an otherwise already decent or great song and append to it That Beat. I hardly ever found it additive.

The one exception that jumps out at me is The Kinks' "Superman." That record is simultaneously stupid and outstanding.

Confessions of a cheaper dad: Took the kids to see Ringo a few years ago. Lawn tickets were almost free on Stubhub with a threat of rain. One of these days they'll appreciate Todd Rundgren being in the band. They also saw Dylan and Willie Nelson in a minor league park because kids got in free.
