Hello, all! Today's playlist pic is a painting by Australian artist Sidney Nolan. It's called "Ned Kelly," and is from around 1947.

There was this thing twenty years ago: https://www.discogs.com/master/1687071-Richard-Meltzer-Robert-Pollard-Smegma-Antler-The-Tropic-Of-Nipples-EP

Meltzer gave me a copy, signed.
Avatar 1:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Strange but true: There are two different Smegmas in Portland. A good while back, the band split into two units, both still called Smegma. One of the Smegmas pretty much only plays around Portland, though, and doesn't have any releases.

Dean:

I wonder if a theme for a playlist could be bands with multiple simultaneous iterations, such as Smegma. Of course, if one of the bands has no releases, then it wouldn't work. But I know of two Barclay James Harvests, both with records. Then there's the spate of UK or US bands who had to append UK or US to their names to distinguish themselves from the other, but that's not quite the same thing.

I met the Semgmites in 1975, at their communal house in Pasadena. I was there as an old school bus was been loaded to head for Portland.
Avatar 2:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Not a Rick Potts painting, no. It's by the Australian artist Sidney Nolan, and surprisingly is from 1947. Impressive that you were there for the great Smegma migration!

Who's in the LA smegma?
Avatar 2:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Same band! They started in California, then moved to Portland in '75. That's why they're still considered part of the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS).
Avatar 2:14pm
Tony Coulter:

Or I should say they relocated around '75 -- forget the exact year. They were founded in Pasadena.

It was pure happenstance Tony. I knew none of those people, but I had gone to The Roxy to see Captain Beefheart, and I had shot color transparencies. There was this fedora in the foreground in lots of the images. Soon after that I was in Poobah Records and I saw the hat. It was a teenage Ace Farren Ford, He invited me over. I met a bunch of people that I still know to this day.

One person that I remember peeking around the corner into the filthy room Ace and I were talking in, was a very young Rick Snyder, who later played in The Magic Band. He was the bass player on Ice Cream For Crow.
