I know his birthday isn't today, but years ago I got into a mild argument with a coworker about Braxton. We both liked the music, but for widely different reasons, and our disagreement got heated. My god, the indelibility of Laurie Anderson’s work. I don’t think I’ve heard “Let X=X” for 30+ years and I was singing/speaking right along. Monumental and immediate.
Avatar 1:57pm
Stork:

@Jeff G. - she is for me one of those formative NY musicians of the 70/80's that having heard her ended whatever resistance to my budding musically obsessions that there theoretically might have been. Ditto Glass.

Weird thing is that I tend to associate Lucinda Childs with Glass, even though I like Available Light much more. To the point I forgot the music, maybe. Dance remains important, but I resent how it overshadows other things
Avatar 2:09pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Of course Laurie Anderson is perplexingly & impressively bivalent in being so representative of the Avant-garde in its strangeness & intellectual remove - & yet so Human & accessible & affectively potent ...the perfect ♊︎Gemini ...like BobDylan, both just channeling the Information in a really gifted manner - & also somehow reflecting on it & even commenting on it as an Auteur @ the same moment.
...& / Or ...maybe as a Woman (& ♊︎Gemini / Messenger ☿Mercury is Traditionally Neutral & the Alchemical Catalyst...) - Anderson adds to the Avant-garde the Feminine - in a way like I think Frida Kahlo & KateBush do to their male-dominated fields...

And of course I've been to some of her live shows at various places in her evolution... and one of the main things I remember those performances having in common (aside from my always enjoying the experience in general) is that I always ended up finding it just a *little* annoying that she often paused just a little bit too long after saying something clever to make sure the audience got it before moving on.

...start the next joke while there's still laughter / number when still applause ...could make too much of that, but interesting maybe in terms of roots...

She captured a lot, which means it will take time to sort what was hers and what was being there. Which maybe shouldn't matter in the first place

Hello Stork and swells. I arrive at the club in the same way I do the work of Laurie Anderson: better late than never.*

* Better Late Than Never
2oz Glen Passaic
3/4 oz Fernet Branca
1/4 oz Maraschino cherry juice
Stir over ice, serve hastily in a chilled coupe or a hot hatchback.

Always say I have a special respect / appreciation / awe for Artists who (successfully) create their own Palette. She kind of conveniently represents this.

It just occurred to me i can't imagine -any- other station doing a show like this. Probably why we are here.

I'll get a Better Late Than Never; but give me the Glenn Branca limited edition GP instead of the the Fernet thing

Yes

I'm reading a Pynchon novel right now, "Against the Day," a book so fat it's almost cubic. Come to think of it, Pynchon might best be dosed by the cc.

A Mormon whiskey called Valley Tan turned up in the last chapter. Glen Passaic can't be far behind.

Wow, the drink orders have been piling up while I was off doing my silly DJ stuff.... priorities!!!
Ike! potato margarita coming right up - just as soon as we invent one. adamdoesit, David in L - fred - lets get those glasses ta bangin, and throwin' back!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:01pm

@adamdoesit: Pynchon's books are getting shorter, though I haven't been keeping up (I'm focused on Colson Whitehead hese days)

It's like her voice changed !...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:05pm
adamdoesit:

fred, I'm getting shorter with age, too, so why not? I prefer short books as a rule, but give Pynchon a pass, so long as he keeps up a good ratio of funny names per page. I haven't delved into Colson Whitehead yet, but there's a book or two of his around here, so maybe next…

@adamdoesit: re: Whitehead, maybe give a pass if those are the popular ones (Underground Railroad, Nickel Boys), these are not his best. Harlem Shuffle is great, as are his earlier ones (I love John Henry Days, The Intuitionist is great too)

fred, solid. Thanks for the tip.

Solid is nice, but what about questionably liquid? Barkeep, a round of Glen Passaic for those who dare!

I saw a few dance shows that used that track, most failed but one really pulled it off

I once used a reading of Howl to fix bugs in software used to disguise the voices of witnesses in Rwanda genocide trials. Both victims and perps, I should add

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
fred:

@Stork: I don't know much. It was important to disguise voices on both sides to get candid testimony. The software tended to get out of sync after a while, so I used a Ginsberg reading from UbuWeb as a test case. I fixed the small issue, I'm not sure the trial fixed the real one
