Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Favoriting May 7, 2022: I'm so psyched to do this with Dave, my meditation buddy from so many years ago. Aram Bajakian is a guitar player who lived in New York for just over a decade but has been based in Vancouver for the past 9 years.
I've done some touring with Lou Reed, Diana Krall and Madeleine Peyroux and have also worked with John Zorn and the original CAN singer, Malcolm Mooney. I write my own music as well that reflects my life. Sometimes it's noisy, sometimes it's quiet. Lately I've been working on a PhD in ethnomusicology, studying the music of my ancestors, Armenian folk music that was recorded around the time of the Armenian genocide.

coelacanth∅:

i've read that (and it makes sense anyway) many country blues artists back in the day usually played 10, 20 etc-minute songs but the time limitation of the 78s means all we know is 3-minute blues songs.
  2:57pm
DavidJ:

I like Oum Kalthoum as well
  3:06pm
Aram:

Yes DavidJ, There's some interesting connections between Oum Kalthoum and this music!
  3:07pm
Aram:

Yes CoelaCantho, I've also heard that they slowed down RObert Johnson to fit more on the LP side. So that it sounds a little sharp when you listen to it, faster than he actaully played. Don't know if this is true or not though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
fred:

@coel: I also read (probably on some Dust To Digital "liner notes" aka books) that this 78s limitation gave us the single format
Avatar 3:12pm
kuriousornj:

The Secret Trio song is turkish song called 'Ağladıkça' = 'While I'm Crying'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
fred:

@Aram: The outpouring of grief at Oum Kalthoum's death is one of my earliest memories, along with what seemed like mountains of pastry for Eid (I was 3, my priorities were not settled at the time)

Aram, a few years ago (when i was more willing to patronize google) there was a youboob video of a guy trying to prove that point. he didn't really, it's still speculation...but of course it's possible.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm

'seems to me (regarding Robert Johnson) there must be some direct descendant of either Johnson, or someone who worked at vocalion (right? or was he on paramount...) who knows
but maybe not.

Aram:

@fred wow that is amazing.

really loving this program (except when my blood starts to simmer, thinking about turkey & pakistan etc regarding armenia)
...but the post office closes at 4 so i must depart.
Thanks Dave! Thanks Aram!

I would be hard to convey what Oum Kalthoum meant at the time. I (briefly) got myself a girlfriend by absentmindedly humming Inta Omri

@Aram: Do you know a French-Armenian scholar/writer named Marian? I don't know anything about him (not even his first name), but I know his daughter. I think both might like your music
  4:02pm
Aram:

Hi Fred, No I don't. Is the person still alive? ANd what do they write about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm
fred:

@Aram: I think he's alive, he's a French-Armenian scholar writing about culture, but I only know his daughter, so my view is severely biased. Like talking about "The" Bruce Dickinjian asking for more duduk
