A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Nice, Handy.
It’s a real strain on the imagination in 2022 to conjure up the bucolic nature of these islands we live on, which have been incorporated into this high-rise megalopolis, as they were only a couple of centuries ago.
Was at the local library yesterday and among the meager pickings was a book Pete Hamill happened to put together (upon the research of one published in the mid 1800’s) about the “great” riots of NYC. And one passage jumped out so much I had to re- read it. Told of a mile-wide lake where the Tombs are now! Made me wonder how many of the original creeks , rivers, ponds and such have been converted up in the push to develop the city for more housing.

TROUBLE, the St. Peter's coach has, indeed, already been snapped up to coach at Seton Hall. Still, the salary he will receive there is still a far cry from what head coaches get at top basketball schools like North Carolina, Duke. Kansas, UCLA et al. Good on him, though, for leading the Peacocks to an unforgettable season.

This Ringer article on St. Peter's has some good info on just how the NCAA system is set up by rich schools in order for those rich schools and only those rich schools to reap the rewards of the tournament, which makes St. Peter's run EVEN MORE unlikely and special:

www.theringer.com...

Basically, the NCAA is as corrupt a governing body as you're likely to find this side of FIFA (or, you know, the government), and it is designed to elevate the wealthy and keep the poor in their place. Remind anyone of anything?

Seton Hall is his alma mater, there was a vacancy... it makes total sense. I'm sure he was conflicted. It was clear how much he cared for the team and was invested in their success. It was heartening to see a coach fully engaged with his team and not delegating interactions to their (most often, "his") army of assistant coaches.

Was just on long walk and ran into another dad, who’s a local DSA member (and big FMU fan). Did another lap with him as he slow jogged to keep pace with my fast walk.

Yesterday, ran into a local Occupy comrade. We commiserated on how pathetic the MSM is; tried to keep from becoming hopeless about the seemingly diminishing prospects of any kind of awakening because of the relentless propaganda barraging us 24/7. It’s frustrating trying to get people to stayed focused on this shit corporate, crony capitalist system and a bribed government being the *real* problems from which all else stems.

Anyway, made me think that these kinds of spontaneous interactions are what makes city life feel like a real community. Because like many especially now the thought of a rural or rustic life seems more and more appealing (instead of this www.vox.com...). At least here I know there are a good handful or more of activist comrades who I know for mutual aid I could rely on if the shit really hits the fan.

@Zinn: My wife watches the daily presser via the White House feed and man, it's so depressing. The entire pack is nearly completely addicted to the gotcha question. It's embarrassing to watch.

I'd love to go and have been meaning to check out that area for a while now anyway. I have some friends who grew up in Rutherford and who have been over there plenty. Little bit of a trip by train and bike because it's a bit out of the way, haha, but some adventure is fun.

Meadowlands as a salt marsh definitely makes sense. I know there have been plans to slowly convert the Meadowlands into a big nature park so water has some place to go as climate-related issues worsen.

In the mean time, we surrounded an expensive sports, shopping, and entertainment complex with a ton of asphalt...

@Rosey: Oh, jeez, that American Dream debacle. Would've been best left as local marsh and wildlife. Wetlands are more important than a damn indoor ski slope.

It would've been better if they hadn't built those sports/music buildings. But at least they don't burn garbage out there anymore!

Ha, and I don't even mean just the mall. I mean everything over there. I think we can find a place to relocate those stadiums/facilities for the sake of a future Earth that's still habitable for humans and most other life. Continuing that status quo instead of trying to make changes for a better future is a choice. It's a choice elected officials and other decision-makers made and that too many citizens continue supporting. Plenty of people in Buffalo support this absolutely grotesque stadium scam they're trying to pull. It's not just the politicians. They need to be held accountable and replaced if they're going to keep doing this crap.

And that gets to the point about how lousy a lot of mainstream reporting has been. Instead of the superficial horserace, both sides are the same, and gossip-type political reporting, and instead of the local network news spending the first 10+ minutes of every single broadcast talking about a single violent crime or single fire happening in a metro area with millions of people, they'd focus on something like all the ways climate change will and already is affecting people and businesses.

There's a lot of great reporting out there that just doesn't get nearly as much attention as the crap that most people see.

The 'brown' of the Brown Thrasher is lovely hue, like a powdery cocoa, very special despite the name brown, it is not what you expect.. ie. not sparrow brown.. You see them by the edge of marshes etc,

Good info on birdsong and its inter-avian meanings. Same as with dogs — the sounds they make and body language they display can mean different things depending on the time and context. If you ask a dog trainer a good question, you’ll know because the answer is usually, “It depends...”
