But the thing about the Casey Kasem out takes is that nobody can avoid being sypathetic to the guy, because we've all had those times when we wanted to explode like that. It made him more human.
Avatar 5:25pm
Don-O Snuggle-O:

True, but Casey as a much cleaner and more professional image to up hold.
  5:32pm
Listener Robert:

Maybe the psychology of some doesn't comport with this, but I think the first thing most people think of when they perceive an image like that is to think of its opposite. And then when they do get an example of the opposite, it's like a relief. And new respect, because when you realize what he has to hold in to project that image, it's more impressive. It's like when you learn an announcer is a stutterer.
Avatar 5:35pm
Don-O Snuggle-O:

Image is everything in the entertainment industry and I suspect Casey falls very much in this clause. Plus he got all into 'positivity' when re responding to the groups and protesting fans.

Thanks for making this Don-O, though if this is supposed to be definitive, I am curious as to why you didnt reach out to us for some up to date comments! :)
  6:02pm
This Guy Is From Negativland And Who Gives A Shit:

About Casey's behavior caught on those tapes we used - years after all this went down I spoke at length with Dr Demento, who worked in the same building as Casey when these tapes were made. He said that Casey acted like that towards his engineers all the time, and had quite a bad rep around the building. And in an earlier years interview in the Boulder Weekly about our U2 record, Casey said that he "wasn't like that anymore," that kind of behavior was behind him. My educated guess is that he had an issue with powders of some sort going up his nose, but eventually got over that habit.
Avatar 6:04pm
Don-O Snuggle-O:

I didn't think you guys were interested in some unoffical like this, so I didn't bug you guys. Plus all the dates and all I had went 'poof' in a house Fire last year....which included my physical copy of TGAFEAWGAS. Sorry for not adding the 'unofficial' part in the discription.

Oh, we admired Casey in many ways. He was a decent celebrity activist, and certainly tried to do some good with his fame.
  6:08pm
Listener Robert:

Anyway, I do recommend everyone see "Sonic Outlaws". It's about this and approximately 3 other issues having to do with unauthorized reception, copying, sampling, and distribution. And Craig Baldwin ought to know, he's a master at repurposing stuff.

I have a friend who plays fast and loose copying graphics into his for-sale (actually for-donations) work, but then wanted to see how he could stop whoever put his published stuff onto ScribD. Listener Robert: I was wondering the same thing, how could satirize such arch-satirists as Negativland? But apart from MAD, SCTV did a pretty wicked SNL parody. I can imagine someone doing a Weird Al parody.

What was SCTV's SNL parody?

for those of you who haven't seen the film "Sonic Outlaws," right now The Weatherman is adjusting antennas and whatnot as we listen to this conversation coming thru the radio.

I used to do a lot of unauthorized receiving of FM subcarrier programs using Bruce Elving's Super Snooper, which he built and sold more or less to protest the law against unauthorized reception of programs sent via broadcast FM subcarriers. Nobody to y knowledge was ever prosecuted for doing so, because it really was a victimless crime, except in the few cases of people stealing Muzak. The vast majority of content on subcarriers was not pay radio.

But then, because it's how lawyers make their money, holders of intellectual property often seem to act (law-wise) against their own best interests. Like the Chicago hotel that was enjoined (or threatened into acting as if they were enjoined) against advertising their Monopoly tournament as such. Instead they advertised it as a Monotony tournament.

Otis Fodder:

Had Sonic Outlaws on VHS in the mid-90s in a house with rotating roommates. Should watch again, loved it, was on the tube a bit back then.

Mr Fab:

I remember a Nardwuar inerview where he kept calling him "Lemmy from Motorhead" and Lemmy kept saying, you can just call me Lemmy, you don't have to keep saying "Lemmy from Motorhead" and Nardwuar would go,
"Ok, Lemmy from Motorhead, let me ask you -" "You don't have to call me Lemmy from Motorhead!" "Ok, sorry, Lemmy from Motorhead..."

Listener Robert:

IP lawyers act as if anything that MIGHT be considered dilution of one's trademark, copyright, or patent, no matter how harmless, needs to be protected against because of the possibility of loss of rights via failure to defend them. But I don't see how Monopoly could've won against a hotel which, after all, depended on players BUYING the game to play it in the tournament, where the game's reputation would in no way be hurt by advertising it on the marquee.

Jumping in 13 minutes from the end, but better late than never. Interesting points about copyright. I tried to license some clips from BBC and CBS for a documentary, and they work through a clearinghouse that wanted $120 a second! All of it was work-for-hire, so of course the people who actually created it wouldn't see a dime.

A stock video house in Chicago wanted over $120K for 45 minutes of Firesign Theatre footage ten years ago. How did we solve this problem? We waited for them to go out of business & sell their archive to the Library of Congress, and bought the footage from the LOC in high def for $450.

Right before Don Joyce started doing "How Radio Wasn't Done", Mark Hosler told me in an interview that by fighting back against the "U2" lawsuits, Negativland intended to send a message to the record industry, and this was it: "If you fuck with us, we’re just going to humiliate you and turn you into an art project and make you look STUPID, and you’re not going to get any money out of us anyway, so please—just leave us alone. And it worked."
