BOB, great to hear Newley's "The Joker" and "Feelin' Good," both from his and Leslie Bricusse's successful 1965 musical, "The Roar of the Greaspaint, the Smell of the Crowd." MY freshman college roommate and I attended the Philadelphia tryout show twice before it went to Broadway. After the first night's performance, he and I intercepted Newley, his wife, actress Joan Collins and Cyril Ritchard("Captain Hook") in the alley behind the theater for autographs as they were headed out for dinner. Ritchard(6'4") and his standard poodle stood so tall as Newley was contrastingly short. They made a perfect pair for the musical, which emphasized dominance and submission.

BOB, does everything lead to everything else? Earlier, you played a Herman's Hermits tune and later the Skeeter Davis song. Skeeter's biggest hit was "The End of the World," which, if you can believe it, was the B-side of Herman's Hermits super hit, "I'm Henry the VIII, I Am!" Fellow WFMU jock and ace archivist Andrew Sandoval would probably say, "Of course, I thought everybody knew that!" LOL!

Of course I treasure every moment of Art Blakey's pioneering contribution to drumming and to jazz, but a small part of me always feels some measure of disgust that he had been so abusive a band leader as to pay some of his group members in heroin instead of cash.
