Temperance movements in the USA date back to the 1800s (Women's Christian Temperance Union) but I think WWI was a bit of a catalyst with the Wartime Prohibition Act, which was replaced by the Vollstead Act in 1920

One other thing about Prohibition: if I understand correctly, it wasn’t illegal to serve alcohol, just to buy it or sell it. So if you were a rich guy who belonged to a country club with a cellar full of champagne, you could drink as much alcohol as you wanted.
