Hmmm, been pondering my past relations with drummers. Drum machines might be acceptable /if/ one can turn down the damn cymbals' volume. Human drummers I've known did quite the opposite when asked to cool the tinging and ringing.

in Ray Davies' book, an autobiography that takes place in the future, in which he astutely replaces "the government" with "the corporation", he laments that all drummers have been replaced by drum machines - dehumanizing music.
...which of course it does - but if he'd only seen the shitball coming down the road called "autotune".

Methinks the secret of proper drum machine usage is to use it as a unique instrument in and of itself, not as a replacement for a drummer. Just as a mellotron isn't a replacement for a string section. Ikue Mori, for example, is a master at using the drum machine in a unique way.

i also did grow to appreciate a lot of music with drum machines (wall of voodoo, suicide, wailing souls and lots of other reggae...)
but in these cases almost always think it would've been better with real percussion.

on their early '90s releases, Shockheaded Peters used a drum machine that was hooked into a sequencer and they said it would react to other instruments, making it almost disappear into the overall sound

i mean, maybe not "common" in the way Beer/400 Blows did, but at some point I noticed that a fair number of acts seemed to naturally grow into a sound that made lots of nods to the "Club." Whether it was 23 Skidoo, ACR, Test Dept, Bourbonese Qualk, Coil, Severed Heads... there's probably more I am not thinking of now (oh, Chris & Cosey, of course). I think there was a certain symmetry in doing so for many.

400 Blows stood out for me, though, because he (Andrew Beer) really didn't hang around too long doing tracks like what you just played. He went and got himself a heavier drum machine and did an amazing cover of a disco song ("Movin") and that was that.

I realize that was a poorly constructed statement Coel, but I was trying to combine looking out the kitchen window and making salmon salad while I was typing. Let me try that again: The sun is shining and there are dark clouds in the sky. It is creating a dramatic effect that the music only underscores. It's quite cinematic really.
