It is pretty difficult to figure out what/who pushed Trane "out"; you'd have to figure Ornette and Cecil had to play SOME part in moving him in that direction (seems a bit like asking "did Louis Armstrong influence jazz musicians in the 20s and 30s, or did Bird influence them in the 40s).

Fred-I should be starting in shedding "stuff" mode, but I've entered collect as much as you can manage mode instead.

Suffice to say Trane did not react to Ornette as Miles did. Trane also enthused over John Gilmore... He was after all juggling Mastery of Hard Bop changes almost simultaneously with being fully invested in Modal ...getting totally Free might have taken him a couple more years - getting it all in before passing away in 1967.

Apropos of nothing except it being the brunching hour, if you add, to Bittman's basic waffle recipe, the optional vanilla, plus 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon of ground cloves, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger, and sub half of the white sugar with light brown, oof, solid upgrade.

Miles dissed Ornette early on, but I believe he did come to appreciate his innovations later, as RRN63 noted. Miles also said something about cherry to the effect that, "anyone can see he doesn't know how to play the trumpet"

The Dead had Branford Marsalis sit in, and also Charles Lloyd. These concerts (as most of the other Dead concerts) can be found on official and unofficial releases. Listened to one of the Branford concerts at a friend's house, was fun to hear.
Garcia is supposed to have said to Marsalis, as he was preparing him to play Dark Star, something like "It's only 2 chords, but the kids seem to enjoy it".
