This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

David Bowie on his relationship to this recording of Black Angels: "Bought in New York, mid-70s. Probably one of the only concert pieces inspired by the Vietnam War. But it is also a study in spiritual annihilation. I heard this piece for the first time in the darkest time of my own 70s, and it scared the bejabbers out of me. At the time, Crumb was one of the new voices in composition and Black Angels one of his most chaotic works. It’s still hard for me to hear this piece without a sense of foreboding. Truly, at times, it sounds like the devil’s own work."

the whole album is incredible, Haitian Fight Song is particularly sublime and Pithecanthropus Erectus is simply a masterwork of a very very high order

Pithecanthropus Exoticus!
Avatar 8:05pm
Flash Strap:

Hiya Doug!
Avatar 8:06pm
Flash Strap:

this cut has taken on increasingly deeper meaning for me as I've been working 7 or so years on a collage book and Pithecanthropus Erectus aka Java Man is one of the major recurring images in it
Avatar 8:06pm
TDK60:

Hearing Mingus, it's like a story or a painting or thought dream.
Avatar 8:07pm
Flash Strap:

"According to Mingus' liner notes, the title song is a ten-minute tone poem, depicting the rise of man from his hominid roots (Pithecanthropus erectus) to an eventual downfall due to "his own failure to realize the inevitable emancipation of those he sought to enslave, and his greed in attempting to stand on a false security." The song's title refers to the Java Man fossil, which at the time of its discovery was the oldest human fossil ever found. "

Avatar 8:11pm
Flash Strap:

"The jazz at the very beginning of "Bacchanale" was recorded live during the prime of New York's famous Village "Five Spot"; also there are many whole compositions embedded in this surrealistic collage, and several in part, including composer's own "African Symphony" and "Wind". "
