There seemed like there was a real movement 15-20 yrs. ago in the USAian culture industry to try to paint Singapore as some sort of simultaneously authoritarian and barbaric state where their draconian laws ran afoul of Amurikans' natural love of freedom and drug running. All sorts of caning stories on the news and tragic (blond-)mother-fights-for-life-of-(blond-)-drug-running-son movies in the zeitgeist. What the hell was that about? Was the CIA trying to make Singapore run drugs for it?
