BH: not sure i understand the question? i live in rural texas, so everyone who lives on my road has their mailbox in a row on the highway across from the road. i have noticed some of my neighbors have new mailboxes that lock. so the mailperson can slide the letter thru a slot but the owner uses a key to open it. but they are only large enough for letters to fit.

there are a lot of low water crossings out here and the mailpeople just have vans or their own cars, so it would be too dangerous for them to drive down some of these long dirt roads delivering mail

a low water crossing is a part of the road that is periodically covered by water when it rains heavily. or a place on the road where the river flows over it all the time, but it's shallow enough to drive a regular car through.
so they are kind of unpredictable depending on how much it rains and where the rain fell. if you don't own a big truck you could really be stuck on your street and not able to leave until the water goes down!

and if the road is dirt, even if the water is gone, they can stay muddy for a long time. i got stuck in the mud in my civic one time, luckily some thoughtful soul had put a hay bale nearby so i was able to stuff hay under the tires and get free. after that i only went driving on unfamiliar roads after a loooong dry spell lol
