Group here is Carlos Ward (alto); Pharoah Sanders (tenor); Coltrane (tenor); McCoy Tyner (piano); Donald Rafael Garrett & Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). (Elvin Jones is extremely well mic-d.)
Avatar 5:10pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Reviews say this shows Love Supreme in a very different light than the so to speak hermetic studio version from the strict Quartet we know as so definitive - putting it all in a whole other perspective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, I read a review that was not positive about it, and basically suggested that at this remove (from the original recording), the band doesn't really know the suite anymore.
Avatar 5:12pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wow. M'kay. Not the spin of the one I read.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm

Tyner and Elvin are absolutely insane throughout, in my view.

Avatar 5:43pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
coelacanth∅:

well...some twat would say i don't know shit (like a robert christgau type of twat) but i say this is the best version OF ALL.
Avatar 6:02pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...well - can possibly by now understand the critique that the specific Prayer that is the album is diluted in focus or sanctity by expanding for this much improvisation. It's different. This particular group of humans just had a gigantic tankful of turbo to burn this night in 1965. Maybe they didn't revisit it cause they felt they'd both already... Like reforming Zep without JohnBonham if you'll allow such an egregious analogy...
Avatar 6:03pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*done both
Avatar 6:04pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or like Dylan saying he can do lots of things ...but he can't write like he did in 1964-6 again...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
coelacanth∅:

no not a bad analogy RR and i understand that angle, but i don't think any reverence was lost in this collaboration...in fact i feel this unrestrained catharsis augments the respectful intention of the composition quite beautifully

Avatar 6:14pm

Yeah, this is his masterpiece. He can do whatever he wants with it. Personally, I love getting to hear him in a live recording airing the composition out like this. Very neat. Wish I was there
Avatar 6:16pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Flabbergasted someone would suggest they 'forgot the Suite' - like these were dilettantes or something. If this isn't people on a vibe together - what is?

Jeff, I think you almost got it but you were off a bit in giving context to the Love Supreme: Live in Seattle performance.
"How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" by Marvin Gaye is what they played on the juke box after the Coltrane set ended. "You're All I Need to Get By " wasn't released until '68.
