Jeff 9:59 if I’m remembering the track name correctly, Flight 17 alternates a few bars of composed straight 8ths with a few bars of pedal point for improv.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am

Aha @DJpeterDE -- looks like it's "Flight 19" -- 17 is the Horace Tapscott number. So many flights, so little time.

Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:59am
DJpeterDE:

So listening to this Sam Rivers makes me think that I discovered Dave Holland first (Seeds of Time) and that led me back to Braxton and Rivers. I feel like whenever I ask someone how they found this music, the answer is usually "my dad/older sibling" listened. But even then, it's often "oh you like this? well you should go back in history and hear xyz predecessor." With me it was self-guided... but this must be typical, right, starting with contemporary music and then learning what it grew out of? What do y'all think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am
Jeff Golick:

Mine was a liner notes self-education, using the college radio station's immense jazz library, starting with the 3am-6am shift. Only later did I learn that liner notes aren't always to be trusted.

doctorjazz:

Hey all, short hello, put today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am

I suspect the NoBusiness deal with the Rivers estate (or whoever) does not include digital rights, for whatever reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am
Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am
Jeff Golick:

(It might be that whoever controls digital rights has plans to reveal a download site of their own at some future date...) (Pure conjecture.)
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:13am
DJpeterDE:

Makes sense, Jeff. I love all the rivers archive releases but I was disappointed that the last two didn’t have Ed Hazell liner notes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am
Jeff Golick:

Aha. Bill Shoemaker is also quite good, I think.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:17am

Indeed! I got over my disappointment quickly! Have really appreciated Hazell's writing in the Muntu collection as well as the earlier Rivers
