Also, everyone should check out Michael Shelley's interview with Pat Vegas of Redbone for a great moment in radio history. Pat starts playing him one of his new recordings. After a minute or so, Michael tries talking to Pat again but of course he doesn't hear him because he is playing the recording. Pretty soon Michael is shouting his name. So damn good.

I lived in Champaign, IL for 12 years - the home of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. The school retired their "Chief" mascot some years ago but "The Chief" (some undergrad jabroni dressed up as an Indian in a headdress) would still show up to football and basketball games to do his dance. All the local yokels and knuckle headed college students would use the ol' "it's respect not a stereotype" argument for bringing back the Chief.

I've hiked the Lenape Trail in New Jersey, also.. but I think it's more of an homage than an actual native route. Though I believe many current roads do follow the original native paths in this country.

@steveo yes most of the major routes (freeways, highways, etc) across and up and down the country are based on Native trails. Those trails are based on animal trails. Animals of all sorts like to travel over the flattest terrain, lowest passes, shallowest crossings, etc.
