A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Androu B.:

Hey there, Rich in Washington!
You probably know me from Station Manager Ken's chat board. This'll be my first time listening to your show. And I couldn't have picked a better time to tune in, albeit in the wake of so many music-related deaths, including tonight's guest of honor.
Here I transcribe (in paraphrase) a post I sent to the Sounds Of Sheffield FB concerning my familarity with Roland H. Kirk and Cabaret Voltaire:

"My first exposure to Cabaret Voltaire was through their being featured on a TV program called Night Flight in the late 80's. Then an ex-brother-in-law introduced me to the 'Microphonies' album (Still have it to this day!). When I discovered the industrial scene, I delved deeper into the CV backcatalogue and followed up on Roland H. Kirk's consequent solo work and collaborations. My nightclub experiences often included hearing 'Sensoria/Don't Argue' somewhere in the DJ's set. May his musical achievements be long remembered and continue to inspire innovative composers of electronic and experimental music. RIP"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Pauly from Clifton:

ultradamno, I could go with Gremlon.

StringOFperils:

Successfully used hard industrial noise in a way that post-punk/goth dance-music listeners would get it, but without veering away very much from the machine/culture-threat at its core. Uncompromising and ahead of its time by a few years. Sheffield must be like the shit industrial backwater that I grew up in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Rich in Washington:

I sorta miss how you would hear about something cool but wouldn't see/hear it right away. I remember reading about CV in a magazine about them getting beaten up at their first gig and having a saxophone covered with fairy lights, etc, and would just imagine what they sounded like.

Hi solo mon!
One of these days I'll get my head examined for reals without making stuff up, NOT.

Hope you're enjoying this last gasp of Summer where we're at, solo mon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm

You'd think, since he's doing a world leaders series, he'd paint Saddam and Trump, subjects he'd have particular strong feelings about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
Rich in Washington:

GW's a better painter than JW Gacy, I'll give him that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Kat in Chicago:

That one was a jam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm

Dubya could learn a lot from Charlie Manson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, it really was, Kat. Kinda peak CV before Chris Watson left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
ultradamno:

Whatever else one says about the show Mindhunter, that they had their Manson sit up on the back of the chair when meeting the agents to make up for his height changed how I think of him forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Rich in Washington:

I forgot about Mindhunter. I think I watched the first season, maybe the second? I didn't know Manson was in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
ultradamno:

Yeah, he's in the second season www.imdb.com...

I remember dancing to this one at Smart Bar a LOT.

Franco Twinkie:

I just got burrito shamed for walking around and eating. Now I'm in front of the screen with a cookie, which is another food infraction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Rich in Washington:

Hi Franco! Sorry about the burrito shaming!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Kat in Chicago:

Franco, if I had a cookie right now I'd be in front of a screen with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Franco Twinkie:

Almond biscotti from Trader Joes.

Androu B.:

Indisputably CV's best known club single. As I posted earlier, the video was hypnotic (and the posted gifs clearly prove it).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
chresti:

You are at the proper screen for eating, Franco, just make sure to wear the safety crumb bag!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
ultradamno:

I thought eating while walking is what burritos were for, otherwise...plate of enchiladas
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm

Crumb bag? LOL

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Kat in Chicago:

Kirky! I'm tearing up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah. That sorta choked me up too. I didn't know what their relationship was as of late. Kirk had been pretty much doing CV as a solo effort the last couple of decades and recently-ish said that Mal's involvement on the last few albums they did together was minimal.
  10:33pm
Androu B.:

This one's reminding me of Oingo Boingo's "Weird Science".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

Franco, you can walk around my house with a Burrito anytime. In fact walk around here now with one will ya!?

I won't fight you, but I might counter with Smelly Tongues as proto-Nagnagnag
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Rich in Washington:

Which Smelly Tongues? Rez or solo Snakefinger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
ultradamno:

Well, Residents was earlier, so for the proto...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
ultradamno:

Though Snakefinger gets the officially post-punk vibe being class of 78
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Rich in Washington:

I think the Res' Satisfaction is the most fucked up rock adjacent song ever. It completely fucked me up for normal music forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Aitch:

Residents Elvis is creepy fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
ultradamno:

Yeah, even Third Reich, as great as it is, never feels like it takes any of the songs apart, turns them inside out and reveals it's inner monster the way Satisfaction does
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Rich in Washington:

weird thing about 3rdRR for me was that I bought it when I was a teenager, sight unseen (just read about it in a Ralph catalog) and was somewhat unfamiliar with 50% of the songs being mangled, so it was a funny weird discovery gradually of what those songs were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm

I didn't know about CV in 78. I imagine it would of been dismissed as having "art damage " by the Hollywood punks/no wavers then.

@chresti You may be right, I think they often got lost in the shuffle because people liked saying Throbbing Gristle more and SPK had an autopsy movie

I wouldn't object to the first side of Auto-Da-Fé getting a play on this show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
