"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

To be clear, it's a technical (work) problem, not a problem that affects my life. So I have to do something I hate to do, which is to give up!

Woods - I develop on Linux using tools that are supposed to be cross-platform... but sometimes I run into some rough edges. Our code is a mix of Python (new) and Fortran (old), the Python stuff mostly "just works", the Fortran compiles on Windows with gfortran but we're stuck using an ancient compiler version and it seems to be impossible to get a decent stack trace when there's a floating-point exception.

There's a lot of important scientific code written in Fortran - nuclear reaction simulations, etc - and not enough people who understand it. All the kids these days are into Javascript and web stuff. Fewer and fewer of us to wrangle the old code.

@YETI BOB: It's true. Had an interview several years ago and all of their work was in the browser. When they asked me what I'd worked on, I brought up stuff like the state machine coded in c++ for a defibrillator and they looked at me like I was speaking Swedish. Next project has a back end written in Go, which I've been learning. I like it.
Avatar 🎸 10:48am
YETI BOB:

Glad that's working out for you, Woods. My plan is to keep this gig until I retire. I used to be more interested in keeping up with the bleeding edge, but now my goal is just to write my last line of code and spend the rest of my time on earth doing gardening & playing music.

karlward: You are 100% right. But Fortran on Windows is not very well-supported. We allow users to modify the code, so the compiler ships as part of the application, and there isn't a ready-to-install version of GFortran11 (unless I go ahead and package it, which is a huge job, but it might come to that)

Tangentially speaking of jazz, I watched the Louis Armstrong 1986 documentary on TCM the other night. The whole day was devoted to him on the channel. It was quite entertaining especially the interviews with long gone jazzerz. The most interesting talking heads were Lester Bowie, who puffed on a cigar and used it to punctuate his comments, and Tony Bennett who talked about being at state dinners with Louis when he pushed Swiss Kriss laxative as a dessert.

@YETI ok yea doing some research i see people have encountered this issue for the past few years, i've got some knowledge of gfortran/python on windows (i am looking for a job btw) but don't have really much to offer here.... if you are running from cmd line did u try prefixing with "winpty"?
