Afternoon all. I started learning Esperanto on Duolingo. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but didn't stick
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
David (in London):

Hey Stanley, Kevin!
Did you get to speak it with anyone Kevin?
Avatar 12:19pm
Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

No David, and that was the problem. The only practical use for it would be to go to conferences with other Esperanto enthusiasts, so I lost interest after a few months
Avatar 12:20pm
TDK60:

Sad news for Fairport Convention fans. Their 2021 festival, which they thought they'd hold after canceling in '20, is canceled. Mainly, due to govt. ineptitude in insurance and pandemic protocols according to their festival coordinator.

I don't have the focus & fortitude to learn other languages. Not up to the standard of many FMU commenters it would seem. I speak Astrology - & I play Gittar... In the computer era my English skills are decaying for that matter...
Avatar 12:22pm
still b/p:

To the tune of "Desperado"..."Esperanto," all about lingual isolation...and breakups.
Avatar 12:22pm
TDK60:

Kevin/Riungwood.UK: I tried to learn Esperanto once, gave up. At the time it was used in international bulletins and correspondence. Lots of Esperantists were into the pen-pal thing. I figure today videos make it easier for spoken language. I think Esperantists rely on global conferences. Probably postponed for now.

Hey Ghuk, all good here! And you?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
David (in London):

Kevin / TDK - I met a load of Esperantists going to a conference on the Paris Metro once. I had a delightful chat with them, but it did seem something of a dead end.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
David Dichelle:

There is the big Esperanto conference coming up online this year, which I might attend myself. No excuse due to the travel etc.
Avatar 12:25pm
Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

TDK, yes, exactly, they have conferences which sound interesting, but the chance of getting to a level where I could attend and actually understand seemed remote. Surprisingly, China Radio International still has a weekly broadcast in Esperanto on shortwave

coel, we are loaded with bread at our house, but you'll have to supply your own cucumber. A brother of one of the owners of the place where my middle son is working owns a middle eastern bakery, and every once in a while he sends bags of leftover baked goods for the worker bees to take home. Sometimes it's a LOT of bread. Last night it was literally a trash bag full. Multiple loaves of three different middle eastern breads, baguettes, several Italian breads, dozens of bagels. But no freakin' cucumbers

coelacanth∅:

Sem i was about to guess liberia -mainly because i have found little good music from there (aside from "traditional" music which i love, but it's similar to much of africa)
there's a lot of crappy new music, like most of africa and probably most of the world - diseased by autotune and rapping and predictable arrangements.
i know David will find better music than that.
anyway i chose liberia's probably slightly less americanized neigbor. i don't know why.

David in London:

Looking forward to this set.

Ypsilanti, where the Ig grew up in a trailer park.

Sem:

coel, thank you for the overview of the musical map there. I was thinking along the lines of enslaved Africans return to their home continent, and that experience results in a kind of musical hybrid.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Sem:

Yikesilanti, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
David Dichelle:

Hey there, Carmichael!

And see you later, Phillippe!

TDK60:

David, never asked but my pals there are old enough to have seen Iggy and crew play. And MC5. They were the sorts.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:03pm
Yvang:

Isn't the chorus reminiscent of "Saudade" by Cesaria Evora?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
David Dichelle:

Yvang: Yes, a little bit, it also reminded me of something else, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
coelacanth∅:

Sem that makes sense, but apparently what happened was the national radio station from c.1960 on (?) played only music from outside the country, rather than support the local tribes' music; and the relocated people didn't generally get along with the indigenous people so there was no push for it.
so there isn't much liberian music from the period that i, at least, consider the renaissance of african pop music, ~1950s>1980s.
(at least that's how i understand it)
there are a few artists though, and David will find them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
David Dichelle:

Thanks for your vote of confidence, Coel!
Avatar 2:16pm
Carmichael:

Did we ever get an ID on the statue of the rocker? I know it's not Phil Lynott, but Lita Ford maybe?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
Sem:

If and when Liberian music gets its random road day in the sun, I have no doubt what you say will be so, coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
coelacanth∅:

...and there is good new african music. tons of it. just i couldn't find any from liberia. some other countries too, without the same excuse liberia has
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
Stanley:

Soukous, Soukous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
David Dichelle:

Well let's see if the randomizer sends us that way next week. The odds are currently around 190-1.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
coelacanth∅:

Sem David might obliterate that theory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
coelacanth∅:

(and anyway, some people *like* autotune, attitude rapping and predictable arrangements!
it's just not for me.)

i knew someone who went to gabon in the early '80s to help build houses. he fell in love, married and made babies. it took ~10 years for his entire family to be allowed into the us.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm

it was like: you and your eldest daughter can come. then a couple years later the 2 other children. his wife took 10 years, as i remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
David Dichelle:

Wait, if he is an American citizen, they should be as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm

the kids, yes. i don't know what the hold up was with the 2nd and 3rd children. maybe the problem was at the gabon end -about separating the mother from her youngest children?

it's very foggy but i kind of remember he was told to get the other kids here then they'll work on getting his wife over. maybe they (the parents) wanted the other 2 kids to stay with the mother, expecting no problem for them when the mom's finally cleared; but were told having all her kids here already would help her case.
i'm kind of guessing on that.
