Favoriting June 23, 2021: Hi-Waisted Modernists #130 - Can Machines Think?


Alan Mathison Turing (23rd June 1912 - 7th June 1954) was the pioneer of artificial intelligence, one of the crackers of the Enigma Code which cut short World War II by an estimated two years, mathematical genius, and LGBTQ+ icon. Persecuted for his homosexuality, he committed suicide after enforced Governmental chemical castration. On today's Hi-Waisted Modernists with DJ GeorgyGirl, The Blue Haired Hippie, I celebrate his life for Pride Month with a reading of his groundbreaking paper "Can Machines Think?".
Turing was granted a posthumous pardon by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013. The Alan Turing Law followed in 2017, which retroactively pardons men cautioned or convicted under historical legislation that outlawed homosexual acts.

The thing is, babies don't know how to talk or walk or read or eat or express themselves. We teach them that as parents and guardians. We effectively programme them. With enough sub-routines that can build on themselves without limitation, coupled with physical structures that can build themselves, true artificial intelligence should be possible, and it will be not only be consciousness, but physical growth. What happens then will be problematic for us, given that free-roaming physical 'bodies' are almost there now, they're just not autonomous YET. It goes beyond 'logical' at that nexus, which is where quantum computing comes in, where the mathematics of logic no longer apply. It will seem to us what used to be perceived as magic, not unlike our brains, and it will either save us or it will kill us. I think it's much closer now.
