PORTUGUESE
It’s called “peru” in Portuguese because it was believed in Portugal in the 16th century that the bird came from South America (“Peru” at the time referred to a much larger area of the continent).

ENGLISH
It’s called “turkey” in English either because it was similar to guineafowl that were imported from Constantinople, or because it was imported to England by Turkish (or Middle Eastern) merchants. Either way, the bird became known as “turkey bird”, which later developed into simply “turkey”.

Hey coel!

A few years ago, Dogecoin did a one-off sponsorship on a NASCAR race car. Fans got to vote on which car would be sponsored and because only nerds were into dogecoin at the time and seemed to be an ironic crowd, one of the least popular drivers (field filler Josh Wise) was the winner. Sponsorship was paid in dogecoin. I believe a typical 1-race full car sponsorship at the time for a back marker was typically less than $5K. If the owner had kept the dogecoin, that one race sponsorship would now be worth tens of millions.

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
Stanley:

Not bad, David.
Over here we used to have a chain of baked potato shops called 'Spud-U-Like'. A godsend amongst the usual fast food outlets. Shame they disappeared.

I am looking on Wickedpea. Interesting that the island of Zanzibar, now in Tanzania, was a capital of Oman. And north, the old Oman empire was in parts of Iran and Pakistan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm

Yes, there are Zanzibari musical influences in Oman as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm
