I went to Vietnam a few years ago on a bike tour, they were indeed very friendly to us. But there are lots of museums whose theme is "America did some really bad shit here". And our tour guides were very nervous and reluctant to discuss the War or current politics.

Many years ago when I was working in the office at WFMU, I had the task of compiling show descriptions from all the DJs for the next issuance of our program guide. As you can imagine some DJs pretty much blew this off and flat refused to participate. It was left to me to compose blurbs for them. Pat Duncan was one such refusenik, and I ended up writing his program description. Here's what I wrote:

"Pat Duncan has been playing punk on the radio since before you were born."

When I left my day job at WFMU, the station threw me a party and gave me some gifts. One of the gifts was a deluxe package at Shea Stadium that included two game tickets behind home plate and access to the fancy VIP restaurant. Pat Duncan secured that package for me. My dad traveled to New York and I took him to the game. It was a memorable day.

I honestly do not remember the outcome of the game. I do remember Pat personally escorting us to our seats. We were sitting right near that lady who came to every single home game and, sitting directly behind home plage, did that obsessive-compulsive rotating-her-arms motion when the Mets had a rally going.

I do remember that glistening cuica drum. It's sitting right here, in fact. I plan to be buried with it.
