Nice color harmony on the covers and the three artworks kind of tell a story.

Tony Coulter:

There's a bit of R. Stevie Moore flavor to Susnara's stuff, methinks.
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Oh: The Susnara tape on now is the one with the scimitar-and-girl cover we've been discussing.
  12:29pm
Mark Williams:

well I'm liking this quite a bit, Tony.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Yvang:

I would enjoy a R. Stevie Moore Tape Hiss special.
  12:30pm
Mark Williams:

i bought an old R. Stevie on Bandcamp day last Fri, actually. That weirdo.
Avatar 12:30pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark! I like it a lot too. I've got two more tapes of his, which will eventually get a hearing here too.

That Pop! cat is automatically cooler than I am, judged by shades alone.
Avatar 12:32pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: I have played RSM on Tape Hiss a few times. The problem with doing an RSM special is that if I played, say, three tapes, it would only represent a billionth of his output.
Avatar 12:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, James! So you're what's tangling up the tape!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Yvang:

Even a billionth of R. Stevie Moore is worth it !
  12:37pm
Mark Williams:

Tony (or anyone) - just how much of those super early R. Stevie cassettes were compiled subsequently in other formats? I have a feeling he's got them all up on his Bandcamp anyway, mind you.
Avatar 12:39pm
Tony Coulter:

Tracks from those early tapes have certainly been compiled elsewhere -- but I don't think many (any?) have been reissued whole.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Yvang:

Yes his Bandcamp is pretty packed!
  12:41pm
Mark Williams:

i'm also getting a bit of Michael Yonkers in this Dan Susnara. He feels like he's got a foot in the US '70s at times.
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Well, I should say they've been reissued digitally, and on RSM-made CD-Rs -- but not on CD or vinyl, I don't think.
  12:43pm
Mark Williams:

are you still buying cassettes nowadays, Tony? Because I still have a player in my car, I'm getting more than my share now.
Avatar 12:44pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, I'm definitely still buying cassettes. It's a never-ending bonanza.
Avatar 12:44pm
Tony Coulter:

And there's still so much to be discovered.....
  12:47pm
Mark Williams:

I listened to a Touch cassette yesterday that I'd completely forgotten about. Narodna. Really tremendous material, but then it was all Croatian or Serbian and just a few years before the mania of war took hold in that region.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
coelacanth∅:

please forgive my ignorance but what does "RSM-made" mean?
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

I just mean CD-R transfers of his own tapes R. Stevie Moore was offering for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Rich in Washington:

Eugene Chadbourne's been doing a similar thing with his voluminous cassette catalog - offering them on CD, but retaining his shelf challenging handmade packaging, most if it made from discarded materials from around his house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
coelacanth∅:

oh,haha ..."RSM" - i didn't follow the thread up far enough. i thought you were just talking about "cassette-artists" in general
(was in the kitchen)
Avatar 12:54pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich! Yeah, you're not kidding about "shelf-challenging" -- I have a special box for my Chadbourne tapes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Yvang:

@Rich : I guess the shelf challenged is hidden inside the crate digger!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm

The last live gig I saw before Covid was Eugene at Turn Turn Turn. I was flattered that he remembered which CDRs I had purchased from him months before. Apparently he assembles them by hand and mails them out personally.

i know someone who's first album (home-made cd) came in a brown paper lunch bag with other goodies, like stickers and...i forget - some things not obviously related to the music. i should've kept it all together in that bag.
i mentioned it to him years later and he didn't remember everything that was in the bag either.

Great to hear my pal Dan Susnara getting the Tape Hiss treatment! We collaborated on a song for his Sus and Them collection of collaborations a dozen or so years ago. I tried calling him (only way to contact him) about this and left two messages, I hope he's okay!
Avatar 1:02pm

Hi, Pascal! Glad you like what you've heard. Unfortunately, this show won't be archived -- Tape Hisses never are. (Only my freeform shows are archived.)

I used to keep weird stuff that wouldn't fit into cassette, cd or record shelves into one big box. I lost a lot of it when we came back from a long trip once to find that our water heater had ruptured and ruined everything in an adjacent closet.

@Little Fyodor - what a delight. Please let Mr. Susnara know he was enjoyed thoroughly today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Rich in Washington:

Rush is still dead. There's that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
coelacanth∅:

it must've been while i was in the kitchen - was that "i hate people" the R.Stevie Moore song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Little Fyodor:

Mark, you betcha!! If I ever contact him again (gulp). I like how late the year is of his tape. I haven't kept close track, but I think most of Tony's Tape Hiss tapes are from back in the 80's or early 90's. Dan was still cranking out the magnetic tape a lot longer than most -- not including revivalists, haha!
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Coel: Nope, the hate was pure Susnara.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
coelacanth∅:

- i thought maybe that's what started the RSM conversation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Rich in Washington:

That was lovely. I tried googling the song title to see if more info was available and it came up with "did Rush Limbaugh avoid military service due to an anal cyst' and it seemed a fitting tribute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Rich in Washington:

This tape is really wonderful!
Avatar 1:09pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Coel: No, it was just that I mentioned that Susnara occasionally reminds me of RSM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm

The Limbaugh song reminded me a bit of Rudy Schwartz Project.
  1:13pm
Mark Williams:

vaguely Magnetic Fields guy, but I prefer not to think of that.
  1:15pm
Mark Williams:

yeah, this really should be reissued. This is quite good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah. Agreed. He's got a website but doesn't appear to have migrated any of his work to digital or CDs, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Rich in Washington:

Oof. Maybe a bit old. It's got links to CD Baby.
  1:18pm
Mark Williams:

Little Fyodor should just tell him that cassettes never went out of style, so just fire up the old dub machine and crank 'em out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Little Fyodor:

I feel cassettes slipped away for a bit and then came roaring back, but you're right, he shouldn't hesitate to crank out the tape! He did switch over to CDR's at some point. I'm a little worried because this has got me thinking about how long it's been since he's sent me something! I used to get a release or two and a four page hand written letter a few times a year, not sure how long it's been now!!
  1:26pm
Mark Williams:

hope he's ok.
  1:27pm
Mark Williams:

this arrangement and chord change is so wonderful ("Even").
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm

They're not interesting, they're just talking about sports and TV shows!!
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha! But they look so happy and so cool.
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Don't you want to be just like them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Rich in Washington:

One problem with CDRs vs cassettes is CD rot. I've accumulated so many CDR releases over the years and sometimes they are on horrible archive hostile cheap brands and don't last very long.

Tony, that somewhat undersells his public profile in late 70s. His fame transcended just football, he was a real superstar personality in his day.
