@Alex: from their website (English version)

French-Canadian Traditional Music

The four musicians of Les Chauffeurs à pieds (meaning either Drivers on Foot or The Feet Warmers) are incontestably among the best in Canada for playing reels and jigs on fiddle, harmonica, mandolin, recorder, French horn, guitar, and foot tapping, as well as signing traditional upbeat or old ballad songs. With its eight albums, including some nominations for prestigious awards, its collaboration with several well-renowned artists, enthusiastic reviews from the media, successful international tours, not to speak of its musical intelligence and twisted sense of humour in English, Les Chauffeurs à pieds confirms its status among today’s main folk bands.

Bit of local controversy when our mayor agreed recently to issue a proclamation. This wasn't the language used , but it was to "acknowledge the 1992 killing of hundreds of Azeris by Armenian and Soviet forces." The actual language included the term "genocide" The headline in print coverage was about how the proclamation "opens old wounds" regarding history, disputes, violence, perceptions and terms used. The naivete of the mayor and anyone around her in not looking carefully at the regional history and realizing quickly that caution and sense should've applied in the assessing and deciding....well, it's surprising and puzzling. And disappointing.

b/p - okay maybe "genocide" is too strong of a term; would "ethnic cleansing" work for you? The 1992 event the proclamation refers to did happen, and it's hard not to see it as other than... an act of ethnic cleansing. I agree though that the proclamation was hardly "apolitical" and that mayor should "scrutinize" these things more before signing onto them.

I included the proclamation's genocide reference as one of the obvious things that poked the beehive. The appalling massacre happened, and here is not where I, with limited knowledge of fuller history/background, would address any of the attendant issues and enduring complications or pick a side in serious perspective and accountability debates. My remark is really just on the lack of even general awareness and the apparent lack of recognition on the part of mayor, et al, that such awareness was called for.

@north Academically speaking. Generally not. It makes zero sense to me since...You know...Ottoman Empire, successor states, has landed in that area, but they get cut off. I know this because people who study the Ottoman Balkans have a hard time finding work because of systemic racism, orientalism, and just geographic hard-headedness. Turkey is the middle east is the middle east; the Balkans are the Balkans. But, as you were saying, what is and is not any of these geographic spaces is basically all nonsense, and different people get angry about their inclusion or exclusion in these made-up blocs.
